I saw them open for one of my bro's many bands. Listened to this CD 3 times online and will get it next round of CD purchases. The lead singer's attitude just cracks me up. And love the sound of cellos.

They look very fun onstage, with victorian vintage style dresses and huge feathers in their pinned up hair. Really nice & friendly offstage too.

RAVE OF THE DAY - Eric McFadden Trio - Heavy Rock

Disclaimer: my younger bro, Paulo, is the drummer for this band when schedule permits.
Un-disclaimer: I'm so picky about music that if it sucked there was no way I'd recommend it, regardless of a family connection. Plus my bro kicks total arse drumming. He and Eric go back more than ten years. There is amazing chemistry between the 3 players, and the gals will love the stand up bass player James Whiton.

    Eric McFadden Trio

ok, you won't believe a 3 piece band can sound melodic heavy metal with acoustic guitar, stand up bass, and drums.

See for yourself! This page holds a huge video file but it is soooooo worth the time. THEY ARE ON FIRE! Love this song, "Put it Down."

Eric McFadden's CD "Devil Moon" is my fav of his solo work.

That reminds me, I've got to pick up the new CD "Joy of Suffering". "Put it Down" - the song on the video -is on this new CD. I was going to buy it at a show but we missed the Boulder show and then I forgot.

Eric McFadden Trio (EMT) has an amazing live show, even with the other fine drummer. Invited my jam-band loving friend to see them when Paulo toured with them. My friend now sees every band Eric is part of, including a Wally Ingram project and Stockholme Syndrome. (And every band my bro is part of, for that matter.) Those San Francisco bands really tour and deliver! - Christina

ACOUSTIC HOUSE CONCERTS - FREE MP3s

I adore house concerts and these are really intimate ones. So since they are free, it's worth a try! They are huge files to keep the good sound quality but we burned ours to CD, deleted from the computer and listen often.

    The concerts I recommend are:

    1) Mark Erelli And Jake Armerding (what a dreamy voice Jake has - I got his CD and am in love. His fiddle playing on the CD makes me cry in a good way.)
    - That concert is listed at very bottom of the page

    2) Danny Schmidt.

I think part 1 has the songs I like best... DAMN this man is amazing. Each time we listen we hear more and more meaning in each song.

    3) Jeffrey Foucault - we've seen him play live also and OHMYGOD. So intense a performer. I think I liked part 1 best.

    4) Radoslav Lorkovic is a sexy pianist. Not every song is my cup of tea but everyone at this Alaska concert went crazy over him and partied all night with the guy. He's got the charisma!

  • RAVE OF THE DAY - GUANO APES

RAVE OF THE DAY - Guano Apes Rock

Hard edged rock with a female skateboarder singer who goes from sweet to full speed adrenaline- often in the same song.

If you need to get your energy flowing, you've got to listen to the Guano Ape's CD "Proud like a God".

If you are already stressed, save it for another day. The additional rush from that music is likely to kill ya!

Many people will already know about them, but it would be a shame to assume everyone has.

Saw a them on a live concert played by public television ages ago and had to get the "Proud like a God" CD right away. Although not every song was my favorite, the ones that were really blew my mind!

Start with "Open your Eyes" on their myspace page
    Then "Lord of the Boards"
    http://www.myspace.com/gapes

The song "Maria" is also my favorite, (but sadly not previewable on myspace) because of that great split in personality. Beautiful lush harmonies then it switches to full speed.

I don't know the later music. They had trouble exporting music from Germany to the USA for the later CDs and their import CDs were $25 on Amazon. I hope finding the band on myspace means that part got easier. I had read they got less intense, music-wise, for later CDs but like what I hear so far.
  • RAVE OF THE DAY - XIREN

    11. Mai. 2006, 18:42

RAVE OF THE DAY Xiren (seer-rin)

I dunno what it is about the band's Xiren's music (named after the middle name of the singer) but it makes me want to dance. But it's not dance music. It's sing along music. Celtic influence, great melodies with techno beats. Xiren is of Irish decent. Aha.

I always have to play it the same day as Aaron English band, though the only virtue they share is forever-memorable melody and harmonies.

Xiren lives in the same city we do, Denver, Colorado USA. When the Aaron English band toured this area, I tried to get them in a show together. Didn't work out, but they were introduced in the process. The large Aaron English band stayed at Xiren's girlfriend's condo near the mountain resort they played. ( a show we missed.) Xiren and his girlfriend were pretty cool to offer such a thing!

We've also seen the full band Xiren play at Red Rocks on the main stage before the Film on the Rocks series. And many solo and outdoor downtown concerts.

The first time I saw the band my jaw dropped with how professional they all were on stage. Now I come to expect it and am not disappointed.

Xiren's promo stuff is always top notch. They even let you listen to the entire CD before buying it!

He has many releases but to get ya'll hooked, Bullets and Rainbows is THE best start. When my sound engineer guy plays it as preshow music, people ask him where to buy it. I WOULD play it all the time but can not seem to find it lately, I wonder who has stolen it, eh?!

Trish Murphy has to be THE prettiest, sweetest gal.
She has later releases, but I like how this CD "captured" her in true life, in jeans, so to speak. Without her music dressed up & all Nashville-ized, if you know what I mean.

This CD does not have perfect sound, but it is REAL and that makes all the difference.

I play the entire CD, sit on the porch in the summer and feel just fine.

These cuts listed are in a bunch of my mix CDs so I can hear them even more often.
    3. The Trouble With Trouble
    4. Paralyzed
    7. St. Christopher
    8. Johnny Too Blue

"Paralyzed" starts out with her saying: "Alright, well lets just play it without him. What a loser."

(I don't know the story about the missing band member, but can only guess! Love her attitude.)

"Johnny Too Blue" cuts right to the chase. Not a word is wasted, it's so singable and honest.

    "Johnny left home for Vietnam
    He never really looked back
    he never really came back."

    And...

"Johnny got out after serving 3-5
Still talking to her like she was still alive."

AND BEST OF ALL, the coolest song on the planet: "The Trouble with Trouble" (the live version)

Even if you don't buy this CD, you have to hear this entire song somehow. You will crack up laughing for days!

  • RAVE OF THE DAY: CLATTER

RAVE OF THE DAY: Clatter - Rock

    Blinded by Vision
"Still" was the first song I heard from Clatter on an online station.

Play it nearly every day. BADD ASS BASS. Love it!

Very impressed the female vocalist/bass and male drummer duo can say "nyah" to a typical 4 piece lineup.
(Don't get me wrong, I think highly of band members. That is, when they show up. Therefore the power to say "nyah" is enviable. )

The other songs that compel me to play them twice in a row are:
    Center Line
    Forgive and Forget
    Nevsky Prospekt

A quick search shows: "Nevsky Prospect" is the main thoroughfare in St. Petersburg, Russia

    A very good interview says:

"Yes, the song is in Russian. It's loosely based on the four months I lived in then-Leningrad in the then-Soviet Union. It's actually just a simple "day-in-the-life" song about going to work, sitting next to a crazy old lady on the trolley, later going on the metro to the cafe "Matriushka" and eating kasha (one of my favorite things to do). The chorus says that Dom Knigi (House of Books) is my favorite store on Nevsky Prospekt, which is the main thoroughfare in downtown St. Petersburg. It also says I read poetry and stories and I like the author Sholokhov. "

RAVE OF THE DAY - AARON ENGLISH

My folks love when I send soundtracks to movies as gifts. The Shipping News, Pirates of the Caribbean, Master and Commander. Dad mentioned the sea faring theme shared in these CDs.

Having sent them over the course of a few years, I hadn't noticed the theme! We just loved the movies and the music. We agree we must have many sea faring ancestors and the music speaks to an inside place - very ancient.

    *******************************
I think that's one of the reasons why my guy and I have kept playing this CD "All the Waters of this World" by Aaron English for 3 years. Aaron is from a fishing village in Gig Harbor, near Seattle, WA. His themes are colored by water.

"To bring All the Waters of This World into the world, English built a studio in a ninety-year-old barn in Seattle and, together with co-producer/bandmates Patrick Strole and Don Gunn, spent a year recording over 400 hours of tracks for the album and tackling the massive task of post-production and mixing. Other core contributors included New Yorkers Meredith Yayanos (violin), Aerin Tedesco (vocals) and Miguel Mateus (bass), who flew into Seattle for several weeks of song arrangement, rehearsal and recording."

We saw them play Denver, and it was a tiny stage, there was a sound guy mixup, no sound check, yet they played their hearts out, didn't say "oh, another night shot" and were really really nice to us. We were bummed when the set ended so two of them sang the last song "Lullaby" on the keyboard while the rest removed their equipment to make room for the main band's set.

The one gal in the group was also an entrancing belly dancer. When you hear the music, you will understand why that also glued us to the floor. After the show, our friend TJ walked straight to the merch table and got a CD and still plays it all the time!

This CD captures the essence of this man, sounds beautiful and the cool instruments aren't overshadowing the sweet sweet sweet melody & lyrics. This CD has not left my player in months. Calming without being boring, during some really rough days.

Thanks for letting me rave. Always on the lookout for music with a soul. - Christina
