"watching 'The Red Shoes,' whatever the quality, on the small screen is like drinking champagne, whatever the vintage, through a plastic straw. The movie should fill one's vision no less comprehensively than a sunset....catch it here now, and you will not just be seeing an old film made new; you will have your vision restored." - Anthony Lane, The New Yorker, on the new print at the Film Forum, NYC http://www.newyorker.com/arts/critics/cinema/2010/02/08/100208crci_cinema_lane

No, I don't have any of the Brattle Theatre recordings, unfortunately. It's a real shame that they've been taken down -- hopefully, they'll show up elsewhere on the internet eventually. As for the Archive stuff, I've only really sampled what's available there so far. My favourite set would probably have to be this one from 2002 (http://www.archive.org/details/KristinHersh2002-05-02.flac16), which includes a lot of "Sunny Border Blue" tracks, and cool acoustic versions of what would eventually become 50 Foot Wave songs. And I'm also really partial to a lot of the "Shady Circle" material. Totally agree with you about KH's quality -- she *does* seem to be getting better and better and it's so refreshing. Not that her old stuff isn't awesome as well!

Thanks for those! Yes, I've downloaded a ton of stuff from CASH over the last few months, and quite a bit of live material from archive.org. Mostly I feel like I'm making up for lost time. This all happened after I rediscovered my old CD of "Hips and Makers" a few months ago, wondered, "gee, I wonder what Kristin's doing now?" and did a Google search. And then got completely blown away by the results. And yes, "Crooked" looks like it's going to be fantastic. Although I'm still a bit disappointed that 'Slippershell" and "Morning Birds" -- probably my two favourite recent KH tracks -- won't be on it. Hopefully, they'll turn up on the rumoured forthcoming TM album.

Yes -- Kristin Hersh *does* rock! I've been on something of a KH bender lately. It's been driving my wife nuts.

Über mich

Boris Lermontov: "The Ballet of The Red Shoes" is from a fairy tale by Hans Andersen. It is the story of a young girl who is devoured with an ambition to attend a dance in a pair of red shoes. She gets the shoes and goes to the dance. For a time, all goes well and she is very happy. At the end of the evening she is tired and wants to go home, but the red shoes are not tired. In fact, the red shoes are never tired. They dance her out into the street, they dance her over the mountains and valleys, through fields and forests, through night and day. Time rushes by, love rushes by, life rushes by, but the red shoes go on.

Julian Craster: What happens in the end?

Boris Lermontov: Oh, in the end, she dies.

Extraordinary how potent cheap music is.

***

It was true that Odette played vilely, but often the most memorable impression of a piece of music is one that has arisen out of a jumble of wrong notes struck by unskilled fingers upon a tuneless piano.

***

Jenny said, when she was just about five years old
'Hey, you know, there's nothin' happening at all, not at all
Every time I put on the radio
You know, there's nothin' goin' down at all, not at all'
But, one fine morning, she hears a New York station
She couldn't believe what she heard at all, hey, not at all
She started dancing to that fine, fine music
You know, her life was saved by rock'n'roll

Orpheus with his Lute made Trees,
And the Mountaine tops that freeze,
Bow themselues when he did sing.
To his Musicke, Plants and Flowers
Euer sprung; as Sunne and Showers,
There had made a lasting Spring.
Euery thing that heard him play,
Euen the Billowes of the Sea,
Hung their heads, & then lay by.
In sweet Musicke is such Art,
Killing care, & griefe of heart,
Fall asleepe, or hearing dye.
