• My Quintessential Metalcore Albums

    30. Apr. 2011, 6:19

Obviously this will be all my opinion and I will 'Leave out so many great albums', these are just a few albums I could not live without and would recommend to those new to the genre and to any metalcore fan in general. Really though this is just a listing of metalcore albums that made an impact on me. I tried to pick one album for each artists to avoid repeat artists, otherwise this would probably only include three artists, I wanted to have some diversity. So without further ado here are my Quintessential Metalcore albums:

    10. The TriptychDemon Hunter
I started listening to DH when I found Summer Of Darkness, and was immediately pulled in, mainly because Ryan Clark’s voice is rather unique and awesome. However I only listened to Summer of Darkness for a while, meanwhile I found heavier bands and Summer Of Darkness started to get a little boring to me, but eventually I found The Triptych. The Triptych is a masterpiece. It showed me how heavy and aggressive this band can be and prepared me for The World Is A Thorn, which is almost as awesome as Triptych. Anyhow, this band stands out in my opinion.

    9. Deep BlueParkway Drive
Parkway Drive is a rather popular/hated band. I’d always been a bit indifferent about them. They are hated by many for their breakdowns, but they are also loved by many for having awesome breakdowns. Deep Blue was the first album I got from them, and it’s awesome. The lyrics are catchy, the production value is great and it pulled me more into this band. I’ll admit I need to listen to their older albums a bit more, but I don’t think anything will impress me as much as Deep Blue did.

    8. The Eternal ReturnDarkest Hour
Darkest hour is another band I came late to the game on. I found them thanks to guitar hero actually. I think it was guitar hero 3 that had Demon(s) as a bonus track. Either way it was an awesome song. I picked up Eternal return when I saw it in Best Buy, basing the purchase off of the one song. And it was a great choice. Transcendance is one of my favorite metalcore songs and very catchy. Awesome stuff. Their latest album is fantastic too.

    7. The Darkest RedThe Agony Scene
I was addicted to this album. This was one of the first metal bands I got into. At the time this was probably the heaviest stuff I listened too. But even today The Darkest Red stands out. I know all the lyrics and can sit through the whole album easily. It’s both fast and brutal. Mike was a high screamer but it wasn’t the scream high it was vicious blood curdling screaming that grabbed your attention. Great stuff. I wish these guys hadn’t broken up, Get Damned wasn’t as good as TDR, but it was a great offering still. I would have liked to see another album.

    6. As Daylight DiesKillswitch Engage
This album is still my favorite KSE album. It was the first one I found from them and the combination of Adam D’s guitar and Howard Jones’ awesome clean/scream vocals makes them stand out a bit for me. This is Absolution, My Curse, and the awesome Dio cover Holy Diver, are my favorite tracks from this album. It’s more ‘ballady’ overall for a metalcore album, but it works very well for them. Their latest album is great but definitely a bit different. Looking forward to the album they are supposed to have this year.

    5. Lost in the Sound of SeparationUnderoath
The first metal song I actually ever listened to, at least that I willingly listened to, was Reinventing Your Exit. I listened to it on repeat for the longest time. It’s an awesome song. However I found it just before Define The Great Line came out. That album was great and kept Underoath on my radar. Lost in the sound of separation though is a masterpiece. The album needs to be heard end to end. It’s got such a great sound, it starts off with a bang and end on a really beautiful somber note. I bought the special edition which came with a cool making of documentary which gave a little incite to the band themselves. Fantastic album, easy to listen to on repeat.

    4. RedeemerNorma Jean
This one is tough because I listened to Oh God The Aftermath so many times when I first got it, but I listened to Redeemer equally I think and overall it’s got a better flow to it. There are a lot of people who like old NJ more and the same amount that like ‘new’ NJ more. I’d have to say I prefer ‘new’ but it’s very close. I think that The Chariot is better than the Older NJ stuff, but that’s a whole other conversation. Redeemer is a crazy and awesome album. Like Underoath’s Lost it starts out with a bang and ends on a slightly softer note. Although the end of No Passenger is a bit crazier. This album is probably my favorite NJ album. Anti-mother was a grower on me, and Meridonal is great, but Redeemer is the best.

    3. The Funeral of GodZao
I have this guy at work who probably will never remember me for this album. I was listening to Underoath and he asked me if I’d heard of Zao. Being new to metal at the time, I hadn’t but was very intrigued. Zao was a whole new level for me at first. It was dark, fast and heavy. It was awesome. The Funeral of God is another album that I can listen to end to end over and over. The rising end has awesome guitar work, psalm of the city of the dead is a great slower song, breath of the black muse is heavy, Praise the War Machine was my FPS jam song, every song on the album is great. Highly recommend everyone buy it. I was very disappointed with The Fear Is What Keeps Us Here, not for the writing but for the production quality. It made it almost unlistenable. I’m glad Awake? Was back to normal. I have high hopes for the new album, hopefully due out this year or early next.

    2. Thrill SeekerAugust Burns Red
I like knowing I listened to ABR before they got really famous. I found Thrill Seeker when it first released. It impressed me a lot because I couldn’t believe how well made it was and how technically great the guys were. The album was fast, heavy, and had a really epic two part ending. And this was only their first album. Two albums later they’ve made their stake in the genre and have inspired quite a few bands. Constellations is probably my favorite album, but I have Thrill Seeker to thank for that. Also I love the album artwork, it might be the reason the album caught my eye in the first place. I can’t wait for Leveler this year.

    1. An Ocean Between UsAs I Lay Dying
I found As I Lay Dying when Shadows are security released. That album is fantastic and I remember listening to Darkest Nights and Empty Hearts soo many times. But when they were making AOBU, they posted Within Destruction on their myspace and it blew me away. They stepped their game up and definitely became my favorite metalcore band thanks to this album. It’s aggressive, technically impressive, sounds fantastic, and overall is amazing. Departed was my ringtone for a while too. This band gets better with each release though, so my favorite album is The Powerless Rise, but An Ocean Between Us made them my favorite band for sure. Also, The last two albums have had awesome album covers.

    Honorable mentions:

    The March – Unearth
    Dreamer – Haste The Day
Blood In The Gears – The Showdown
Myself > Letting Go – To Speak Of Wolves
With Roots Above and Branches Below - The Devil Wears Prada

Hopefully the few people that read this will enjoy it. It was fun to write.

    Most hated artist?
Justin Beiber (first thing that comes to mind when I think terrible music) When it comes to metal, There is a lot of bad metal out there, as for famous metal bands I’m not a fan of Judas Preist or King Diamond, can’t get myself to like their voices, and regardless of how talented the music might be, the vocals kill me. Oh and Slayer. Not a fan thanks to Raining blood on Guitar Hero, song pissed me off.

    Song that makes you think?
Anodyne Sea by As I Lay Dying has had me thinking a bit mostly because of the music video for it. It’s about facing conviction as a Christian. That or Rosetta Stoned by Tool.

In The Midst Of Lions, or The Defiled

    Coolest music video?
Anodyne Sea comes to mind again, it’s really interesting how they shot it, and it has a good story to it.

Used to be able to play French Horn, but not anymore. Probably could play drums if I got an actual set, I play expert drums a lot on rock band and GH. (I know it’s not the exact same, but the basics of it are similar)

Ever been in a mosh pit?
Sort of. My church hosted a concert by a local band that isn’t together anymore named We 3 Kings, there was like 50 people and we were moshing, but it was safer I’d say then a full blown mosh at a big concert.

    Are you in a band?
I wish, I can do screamed vocals. I scream along with metal in my car a lot.

    Ever dated a musician?
My girlfriend fiddles on the guitar and piano, but isn’t in a band.

Do you wish yourself that you were a musician?
I wish I could be a metal drummer or vocalist.

Best chick band you know of?

What do you think of death metal?
Awesome, although I prefer more modern DM and melodic death.

Do you listen to music in foreign languages?
If it’s good, although I like screaming/singing along so I prefer English. A lot of Swedish metal bands sing/scream in English though. The Haunted is a great example of that. We butter The bread with butter sings in german and English.

Do you listen to bands from foreign countries?
Again, the Haunted being a great example.

Best local act you can think of?
This band from Tampa called Unkempt. Underoath is from Tampa too which is an hour from me, but I’m not sure that counts.

Do you follow the music charts, like the top 40?

    Not too sure actually.

Do you know the names of all the bands members that you listen to?
I know the names of everyone in As I Lay Dying, Most from August Burns Red, and other than that I usually only know vocalists names. My favorite name is Schuylar Croom from He Is Legend.

Does a musician's physical attractiveness play a role in the music that you listen to?
No, but it helps if they look cool.

    All the time.

If it’s a good band, I think they’re cool. Bad band, I just ignore them, or think they have bad taste depending on how bad the band is.

What music sub-culture do you feel like you belong to?
Metal. Well… New Wave of Heavy Metal is more like it. I don’t tend to listen to much before the 90’s.

    Either one would be cool.

How important is your partner's taste in music to you?
Very, she’s got great taste though, I call myself the weirdo for liking metal a lot. She likes some metal though, like System of a Down.

The End! Yay! Thanks for reading if you did.
  • Top 10 Metal Albums I'm Excited For In 2011.

    2. Feb. 2011, 1:55

I'm a little late to the 2010 top 10 albums (2010 also had releases from many of my favorite bands), so I figured I'd do a top 10 that I'm most stoked for that are slated for a 2011 release. Here they are (in no specific order):

1.Darkest Hour - The Human Romance

I found Darkest Hour through goodwill actually. I picked up Undoing Ruin for $1.50. Great Album. I later found So Sedated, So Secure at FYE for like $5. Then when The Eternal Return came out I bought it right away. Transcendence is probably my favorite song by DH, it’s a perfectly crafted song with an awesomely catchy screamed chorus. DH is definitely one of the better Melodic Death Metal groups out there. Anyhow I’m excited for The Human Romance.

2.Becoming the Archetype – Celestial Completion

I picked up Dichotomy because the cover was awesome, and the lead singer on the back was bald and had a red beard (Ryan Clark of Demon Hunter is bald with a red beard.) and while they don’t look like twins, in Best Buy I was like “Did Ryan Clark join a second band?” Thankfully he didn’t leave Demon Hunter, but thankfully enough I still bought the album because BTA is awesome. If they stick to their sound this new album should be great.

3.Winds of Plague – Against The World

WOP isn’t one of my favorite bands, I really liked the Great Stone War, but they aren’t really a band I listen to all that often. However I saw a video of them performing a new song called “Refined In The Fire” with guest vocals from Mattie from For Today (which is honestly surprising since the chorus of RITF is screaming ‘EVIL F-CKING FEARS ME’) Anyhow the song is really catchy and awesome, probably going to buy this album on day one.

    4.August Burns Red – TBA

They said in an interview Home was just something to whet our appetites, and that they are working on something new to be out this summer. I’ve been a fan of ABR since Thrill Seeker, one of the best metal bands in my opinion. Constellations was epic. Definitely buying this album on day one, probably pre-order and get a shirt bundle.

    5.Dream Theater – TBA

I started listening to DT last year actually (yeah yeah, I’m about 19 years late to the game). I found Train of Thought at the library. Train of Thought is probably their best album if you ask me. Black Clouds and Silver Lining was awesome too. Mike Portnoy is one of my favorite drummers, and since he’s gone I’m both sad and excited to see how DT does without him. It will definitely be interesting.

    6.The Haunted – Unseen

I bought Versus and was blown away. The Haunted has become one of my favorite bands. I bought One Kill Wonder and was stuck by the difference, but still liked it, although Dolving is a much better vocalist in my opinion so I’m glad they stuck with him for everything else. I love the direction they went after rEVOLEr though. I wasn’t a huge fan of their Trash metal stuff. The Dead Eye and Versus are the best albums they have put out in my opinion. I’m also going to buy this album on day one.

    7.Metallica – TBA

I know everyone loves Metallica, but I’d probably be stoned to death for saying that I think Death Magnetic was their best album. I listened to it for probably a week straight when I first bought it. It was practically perfect. So I’m definitely going to buy the new one when it comes out. Glad these guys are still in the game.

    8.Tool – TBA

I have read around the internet Tool probably has a new album coming out this year. 10,000 was perfect in my eyes. I hope they do release a new album this year. It would be awesome. Time will tell I suppose.

    9.Unearth – TBA

The March was Awesome. III: In The Eyes Of Fire was awesome. I’m not sure what took them so long to decide to make a new album after the March, but I’m glad they are releasing something finally. Should be awesome.

    10.Zao – TBA

Zao said that they are going to continue making albums if the fans want them. Zao was one of the first Metal Bands I got into. They were the heaviest thing I had found. The Funeral Of God was pitch perfect. I later found Liberate to Ex Infernis, which was also a great album. I lost hope a bit when they released The Fear That Keeps us here (which has great acoustic stuff on it, but the idea of trying to make it sound live was terrible for me.) Thankfully they went back to a studio style for Awake? Which was great and I luckily got my hands on one of the apparently limited amount of physical cd’s. So if they make something this year, It’ll be in my collection.

There you have it, my stoked list. Unfortunately many of these have no set release date, and no title or hardly any info yet. But Hopefully they will see the light of day soon. Also I know I’m leaving out some great bands, and rest assured I’m excited for those albums too.

    Here are some runner ups:

Born of Osiris – The Discovery

Emmure – Speaker of The Dead I've heard that unfortunately they haven't really gotten better. It's apparently better than Felony, but what isn't? I'll give it a listen eventually. The Respect Issue is the best album in my opinion.

The Famine – The Architects of Guilt

    Animals as Leaders – TBA

Austrian Death Machine – Keep It Brutal

    Testament – TBA

    Shadows Fall – TBA

    Meshuggah – TBA

In Flames – Sounds Of a Playground Fading

    Mastodon – TBA

    Black Dahlia Murder - TBA

Between the Buried and Me - An EP coming out eventually.

Bury Your Dead{/artist] - Mosh and Roll (I personally loved It's Nothing Personal, regardless of all the haters.)

    Thanks for reading!
