Oooh, vintage Elvis - super! I always liked the Sun sessions the best. The other song I've played that much is "Roam" by the B-52s, which was waiting for grad school acceptances therapy. Any Beatles for me is good (except maybe "Revolution No. 9" and that song about killing pigs? Their later stuff where they got kind of trippy? I dunno).

I actually HAVE played "Crash" 120 times. It was therapy for me during the election.

Yeah, I've never been so glad to be a grad student with absolutely no free time. It really helps in trying to keep the show from ending. I may finish it this semester...or not. It depends, but I am eager for things to calm down a little here so I can get back to it. The last episode I watched was "Sons of the Tundra," so yes, I have seen the wheels set in motion for Rob Morrow's departure. I agree about how it was handled--it didn't seem abrupt to me except for the proposal, which did come out of nowhere. But then it fits the characters and our expectations for the way they operate. It also nicely follows Joseph Campbell's structure of the hero's journey--Joel goes native to fight the final battle with his demons, or maybe I'm being too theoretical about that. Chris would like it, though. I am putting off the end as long as I can. I know certain things about a certain Iris DeMent song that makes an appearance...and it's gonna hurt.

The characters are amazing indeed, and they're so well developed that you do think of them instead of the actors. It almost hurts to think that this is fiction because they're such cool people. I do love that season six opener, too---Shelly was awesome indeed, and it's such a cool showcase of what a great actress she is. I am on (I think) episode ten of the sixth season--I'm trying to drag this out as long as possible, partially because my work/school schedule doesn't allow for a lot of TV time (it took me almost a year to get through season 5) and also because I'm in denial that the series ends here and I want it to go on as long as possible. Sure I can start it over, but the first time through is always most memorable. So far, though, I think season three is my favorite, though four and five don't disappoint.

Both of those episodes are among my favorites---I love Shelly's repeated encounters with her daughter at different ages, and that moment where she learns she's going to have the baby upstairs from The Brick. Cynthia is really brilliant. It's funny about Maurice because season five was the point where I started really liking him---I think "Seoul Mates" (which I just watched a few nights ago--merry Christmas) was the beginning, and his health crisis early in the fifth season and those later issues and moments of self reckoning sort of drive him forward more as a sympathetic figure. Which shows how great the characters are, of course. Some other awesome stuff coming your way soon.

I am not quite halfway through season six, and I am stretching it out as long as I can. I've gotten so attached to those characters over the two years I've been watching the DVDs that I want to make it go on as long as possible. But at the same time, I can't wait to start it over again and watch the early episodes knowing how it turns out. Has Shelly had the baby yet? I love that episode.

Hey, I just now saw your post on my wall---I love that episode with Shelly's nose, too. I like all of the weird transformative stuff that starts happening to her between seasons 3-5. She has a nice character arc :-)

Yeah, four stars on the new Carlene Carter. The production's a little slick in places, but I have no quarrels with it overall. Some of the songs are pretty heavy given all she's been through in the last several years. Great stuff overall.

Über mich

I've loved country and rock'n'roll since the early 60's, so I guess some of you can understand how everything fell into place when I got my hands on "Johnny Cash - The Sun Singles".

But since I grew up with Beach Boys and the Beatles, pop is sort of ingrained as well.
Nowadays, I listen to pretty much anything except opera (and sometimes I can take even that - in very small doses...)
French chansons are quite OK by me, but so are Chicks on Speed and Regina Spektor - whatever it takes to make life bearable.
I guess a lot of people would say that I just have no taste :-)
