First Light - The Phish Effect

I wondered what to write in my first journal entry. After a while an idea occurred...

I figured it would be a bit like a newly commissioned telescope gathering its first light and seeing something surprising. Of course, in this case it has to be about hearing something surprising. In my case, the surprise was in that its taken me so long to take the plunge and buy a Phish album (or three).

Having been aware of them for a long time, and heard the odd tune, I finally bought a copy of Rift. It blew me away. As have each of the albums I have bought since. But not one of them compares to the live Phish! I'm too late to see the beast in the flesh but I now have various live recordings and each one is simply out of this world.

If you like soaring improvisational guitar breaks and flying keyboards backed by a solid groove then check this band out. I particlularly recommend the songs:

Slave to the Traffic Light; Horn; The Squirming Coil; Reba; Guyute; Wading in the Velvet Sea; Rift, and Silent in the Morning.

Though I could go on and on, especially when it comes to the live stuff.

Sounds interesting. The samples here wouldn't work for me so I had a listen at Amazon. It reminds me a bit of Frank Zappa.

Phish is basically what would've happened if Frank Zappa and Grateful Dead had a child.

More like if zappa was a woman and became pregnant after being gangbanged by the dead, jack kerouac, david byrne, and all those quintessential lame-ass dada poets of the 30's.
