  • THOUSANDS of Scrobbled Tracks!!!

    15. Jul. 2007, 0:57

Ok, so, I was trying to do a cute little journal entry every time I hit a 5,000-tracks-scrobbled milestone. I thought it would be neat to see the change in my musical taste and whatever was popular to me over time. Anyway, at 15,000 tracks... what was to be my third installment... i effed up and forgot. From that time on, I've tried to see what my whatever-thousandth track was for fun. Here they are....

16,000 - How Can It Be
I heard this track on a commercial for like Boston Store or something and was completely hooked.

    17,000 - Rehab
For the record, I was digging on this way before the rest of the US.

    18,000 - Your Honor
Even though I was up on Amy, I was way far behind on Regina, now I don't know how I lived without her.

    19,000 - Lost Without U
Overall, a pretty good album, but I can't get over that he is Alan Thicke's son(of Growing Pains infamy)...

    See the resemblence?

    20,000 - Last Night
Um, one of the greatest songs ever. I think I planned this one to play because it pretty much sums up everything that I love about music.

    21,000 - yeah, missed it

    22,000 - Sparks
Probably my favorite love song. Sooooo pretty!

    23,000 - Sunday Morning
Also a pretty sexy love song. At least I think so.
Maybe it's just because of the lead singer.

    24,000 - A Friend's Cancer: Good For Your Health?
From a really great podcast... I don't remember much about this episode, but occasionally I save ones that I think are particularly funny, and this one made the cut. If you're interested, it's super easy to find on itunes. It comes out every day and it's only about a minute of this guy with a really great newscaster voice giving a break down of a similarily ridiculous headline. Enjoy!

    25,000 - Jingle Bells
This is what happens when you put your library on shuffle. Christmas in July.

I also took a couple of seconds to look at the artists that have the most songs in my library to see if they matched up at all with my top artists. They do not.

    1. Barenaked Ladies - 107 tracks
    2. Sufjan Stevens - 98 tracks
    3. Ben Folds - 96 tracks
    4. Dave Matthews Band - 91 tracks
    5. The Beatles - 73 tracks
    6. Rufus Wainwright - 72 tracks

Well, in some places they match up I guess. Anyway, this is my fun little journal entry. Hope you enjoyed. Let me know what you think. But don't be a prick.
  • 10,000 Tracks Strong! Est.: 4/6/06

    21. Dez. 2006, 20:23

Ok, so, luckily I was paying attention to my little song counter thingy and am able to make this into a cool journal entry. Actually, since I noticed I was getting kind of close, I've been obsessively checking every few hours... but not the point. When I realized that I was getting close to 9990, I made a playlist of ten well-representative tracks that take me from my past preferences and into my future ones. As I write this, I am listening to that very playlist and editing it feverishly to make sure it's just right.

    Rilo Kiley- Accidental Deth
It's all music that I love, but I wanted to start off with where I left off. At 5,000 tracks, I had a Rilo Kiley song, so the playlist starts with one.

Jenny Lewis with The Watson Twins- Born Secular
This artist is forever tagged wrong in my iTunes, but I've gone too far to change it. For the most part, I'm not a huge fan of the twins, but in this song they're delightful. Plus, with the first track, I wanted to sort of segue (not sure if I spelled that right) and I thought this worked. And I'll admit, I love the country-esque flair... perfect for the next song...

Joaquin Phoenix & Reese Witherspoon- It Ain't Me Babe
I know it's incredibly cheesey, but I love this album. It is their real voices too, so it's not totally remastered and ubercommercialized and all that dumb stuff. That's how I'm justifying my total and complete love of this song... and Joaquin.

    Regina Spektor- Fidelity
Heard about twenty seconds of this song on the radio in the middle of the night once, and then I heard about two minutes of people calling in and ripping on it. Whatever, I love it. Soooo pretty. I wish I would've gotten the heads up on this artist a while ago. Actually, after hearing it on the radio, I went on Last.fm, and she was in my recommended artists, which makes me pay closer attention to that section now.

    Matisyahu- Chop 'em Down
Thank you Drew Domkus for introducing everyone to this supa' cool guy! I love artists who can make it work live, and he certainly does. Plus, who can't love an singer with a life story like this one?

    Jason Mraz- Older Lover Undercover
Another artist that makes it happen at every live show. An incredible musician who doesn't get a lot of the credit he deserves. Speaking of credit... Andy didn't make me wait until he got home for the new album (which this is on). And apparently, it's important to link to him, so Andrew Michael Schultz is a supa' fly guy! (We'll see if I can get that to work...doubtful.)

Nil Lara- Fighting For My Love
Just recently fell in love with this song. Honestly, don't know anything about the artist or anything. All I do know is that I can never get it out of my head. As a little reward to myself for reaching 10,000 tacks, I'm going to go out and actually buy a few CD's. This is on my list of must buys. I'm quite excited.

The Flaming Lips- She Don't Use Jelly
I used this next in the list to show my trend of music with a sense of humor. This song certainly has that. And I know I'm super late on the Flaming Lips bandwagon, but does that make me less of a fan? A few of their CD's are also on my Need To Purchase list.

    The Strokes- What Ever Happened?
I have loved The Strokes for a really long time, but Room on Fire is not something I spent much time enjoying... not their best work. However, a trailer for Marie Antoinette reminded me of the beauty of all things The Strokes... and Kirsten Dunst.

Ryan Adams- Come Pick Me Up
Didn't originally notice that Kirsten Dunst also helped me love this song and artist, but I first heard it in Elizabethtown (...eh) and the song is maybe the reason I gave the movie thumbs up. And maybe a little Orlando Bloom. Anyway, this is my top played track, so I thought it would make a great pick for 10,000th and even though some people don't fully agree with the reasons that I love this song, the lyrics are beautiful and I do get it.

So, that's my countdown. A little long... but it has taken me a while to get here and countless times of fixing my broken scrobbler thing. Now I can't wait for 100,000!
  • journey to my 5000th track

    5. Okt. 2006, 2:28

it has been quite a variety of music that has brought me here, but i wanted to make sure that my 5000 track represented all the ones that came before it. that's why i chose Rilo Kiley- A Man/Me/Then Jim.

in the last year, my musical tastes have morphed almost completely. while i've always enjoyed indie-ish music, my musical journey of the past year have brought me in many different directions and i've found out about a lot of great bands.

while i have only been a last.fm member for a few months, my top artists list is finally getting to the point that i can show it off and say "yes, these actually are (for the most part) my top artists."

um, i'm really tired, and this sounds kind of babbly in writing, but in my head it's very clear.

just to reflect.... these are some albums of the last year (and before) that have really influenced where my musical taste is today....

    the oc: mix 1
    garden state soundtrack
    grey's anatomy soundtrack
    gilmore girls soundtrack
    tsotsi soundtrack

    more adventurous
    back to bedlam
    tonight, not again: live...
good news for people who love bad news
    reconstruction site
    plans
    goldfly
    a boot and a shoe
    lost and gone forever

    mixes from peter and andy

i'm really busy, so i'm not going to take the time to tag all of these. but, the point is, i'm really happy to know this music and i love it. i accept this award on its behalf.
  • Mainstream Percentage

    27. Sep. 2006, 3:58

Go through your top 10 artists and add up the total number of listeners. Divide the average by the number of Coldplay fans (Coldplay is - at the moment - the artist with the most listeners). That is your "mainstream percentage".

    Brandi Carlile...........................................6,235
    + Guster......................................................50,056
    + Sufjan Stevens....................................150,776
    + Jason Mraz............................................65,050
    + Panic! at the Disco.............................138,809
    + Rufus Wainwright.................................92,400
    + Ryan Adams.........................................77,214
    + KT Tunstall............................................68,302
    + M.I.A.......................................................72,052
    + Ben Folds............................................108,797

    dividedbydividedbydividedbydividedbydividedbydividedbydividedby

    Coldplay............................................. 384,531

    ..............................................................= 21.58%
Not gonna lie, i thought i was way more mainstream than that, but cool! I think if you evaluated all my top 30... which i will not take the time to do, it's be closer to 40%... anyway, this was cool, and someone should comment on it telling me so.

ok, so, i love doing the fun little "top ten" type surveys and found one yesterday that i was totally excited about....

Go through your top 10 artists and add up the total number of listeners. Divide the average by the number of Coldplay fans (Coldplay is - at the moment - the artist with the most listeners). That is your "mainstream percentage".

... but when i started to figure it out, i noticed that a lot of artists were coming up as having zero listeners. i figured it was just a glitch, but i'm looking again today and it seems that that feature has disappeared ENTIRELY!!!! from the artist descriptions. all i can say is what the fuck?!?!?! because not only am i mad that i can no longer do this super cool survey, but that was also a very cool figure to have so i could see just how many other thousancs of people enjoyed my artist too(especially if i thought i discovered them.

so, in conclusion, my yin and yang are balanced... and i'm pissed... i hope someone from last.fm reads this and fixes it, because to not have that simple little feature is dumb... and i miss it already.
