• When bands make it big

    4. Mär. 2011, 21:54

The 2010 Grammys were aired on February 13, 2011, and I expected the normal status updates as the award show progressed. "What the hell is Gaga wearing?!" "Who is Mumford & Sons??" "Muse = gods." Stuff like that. As I scanned through my news feed, I came across a comment that I've seen occasionally throughout the years. The good, can't-do-without comment from the snotty Indie fan, declaring arrogantly, "I think the critics are trying to kill Arcade Fire by throwing the indie band into the limelight."

I've heard this comment before by other music fans. People who say, "I liked that band BEFORE they became popular, now I just don't." I totally understand this comment if it is merited. It does suck when a good, original band goes commercial after they obtain fame to try to keep their fan base going. I used to be an extremely loyal Black Eyed Peas fan, but to me their sound has just gone down the hole into a typical pop music format. Will.i.am has even stated in Rolling Stone's article "40 Reasons to Be Excited About Music" that music should be created with the thoughts of how it can be used to help market stuff in businesses. Oh, I could rant about that one for a while, but I have to remain focused!! The point is, yes, there are groups that sell out, and yes, it's incredibly annoying when they do so.

However! Arbitrary statements about how an indie or obscure band is suddenly going to suck just because they have gained popularity in the main stream are completely uncalled for. Yes, yes, we all know that all good bands get into the music business solely for their deep love of creating and producing music. But you know what? If they were in the music business just to create and produce music, they wouldn't seek a record deal. They would stay in their basements with their day job, earn enough money to buy equipment for their own recording studios, and produce their music that way.

When a band seeks a record deal, they are saying to the world that they think their music is special, and that others should hear it. Hey, if they earn some money doing it too, that would be great as well. They know they have talent, and they want to prove it to the world. There are artists and bands who are purely interested in the notoriety and financial gains through the music industry, but I think it's safe to say that bands like Arcade Fire are in it 99% for the music.

So why on earth wouldn't they want to become popular? Why wouldn't they want as many people as possible to listen to their music? They didn't become a band for the sole purpose of providing YOU, disgruntled fan, with music. They made albums to share their music with as many people as possible. Along those lines, why on earth wouldn't they want to receive the prestigious award of Album of the Year for The Suburbs? That's just like saying an academic shouldn't accept any honors for working so hard in school because now their ego is inflated, and they're going to produce mediocre work.

Not only that, but bands like Arcade Fire NEED to be pushed into the limelight! Anyone who has heard music nowadays and has any sort of taste has to be able to tell that most main stream music is just bland mush. Everyone has the same voice, the lyrics are all similar, instrumentally each song sounds like a plagiarism of the next. I am confident that bands like Arcade Fire are not going to sell out commercially. Can you see them suddenly making some sort of electronic dance song that could possibly be a rip off of Ke$ha? Of course not! If their sounds goes down the tube, it isn't going to be because they won a Grammy. It's going to be because the creative process failed in that particular instance.

Look at the Beatles. They were incredibly main stream, won award after award throughout their careers, and yet their sound continued to flourish with each and every album they created. There is not one Beatles album that sounds the same. Why is this? Because the Beatles were true musicians, and were making music to make music.

So please, let bands get popular, and don't bitch about it. Let them gain the fame that they deserve for all their hard work. If their sound does go down the hated commercial path, then they weren't the innovative band that they were supposed to be, and it's their own fault. Let's allow bands to be rewarded for their efforts, and hopefully inspire them to create even greater things in the future. If we're lucky they'll inspire the next line of musicians in the future, and we'll hear even greater music as time goes on.
  • Drinking through the decades!

    11. Jan. 2011, 2:04

I haven't written a journal entry of substance in a while, and I'm not sure that this one is really breaking that trend. It does require more thought on my part, so there's a start! I'm currently excited because I'm making up a list of songs for a decades of music themed power hour! YAY!

What is a power hour, you ask? You don't drink all that much, do you, I ask back? No, in fact I don't, you got a problem with that, you ask? Whoa, calm the hell down, please, I ask? Ok, I'm done :P According to the grand website of Wikipedia, a power hour is, "a drinking event where player(s) drink a specified number of alcohol shots within one hour." Wikipedia also says that the game is supposed to happen when someone turns 21, but pssh, we've never played it in honor of someone turning 21 >_> We always just do it to do it!

The way my friends and I do a power hour is that we make mix CDs with themes. Each song clip lasts one minute, and you have to take a shot of beer at the end of said minute. Needless to say, you end up quite shitfaced in a short period of time! I've played a Disney themed power hour, a Lil Wayne one, a rap one in general (the last two were made by the same person), and finally a decades of music one at someone's house. I thought that one was a blast, and have wanted to make my own ever since. So here's the list of songs separated by decade that I'm planning on cutting up and turn into the backdrop of a night of drunken pleasure :) They're not in the order I'll probably put them in, I'll have to work on that one, but that's just part of the fun! As I said, I'm pretty stoked to make it! :D yoshibluehaha helped create the list as well! She and I have nothing else better to do during class, ha...

I have to say I'm surprised that they did actually include some groups that I wouldn't expect them to acknowledge (i.e. The Velvet Underground at 24! Cool!). There's a couple weird things that I don't really understand. I think Mariah Carey and Alicia Keys should be switched. No doubt Mariah's got a great voice and has been extremely influential (I believe she has the highest record sales of any solo artist? I could be talking out of my ass though), but come on! Alicia Keys is AWESOME! She plays a killer piano, sings, and is just awesome. Pearl Jam and Green Day are a little too low in rank in my opinion. I mean come on. Green Day has been around forever! Really, really happy to see Steely Dan made the list ^_^ One of my favorite groups evaaaaa!

See, Coldplay, at 67? No, no, no, no. Green Day so beats out Coldplay in terms of artistry. And geez, good old JT is much too high. Don't get me wrong, love the guy, and he's been around forever too. Buuuuut...I don't know. To outrank Rush, Mary J. Blige, The Bee Gees, and various other people...yeah, I don't think that's kosher. Parliament-Funkadelic got an amazingly high position! I have to be honest, I don't know a single thing about them besides the song "We Got the Funk," but cool to see another name I wouldn't have expected! Someone else would have to give in their two cents as to whether or not they deserve spot 49 or not. Yeaaah, glad to see Rage Against the Machine!

Not a huge amount of girls on this list. I'm kind of sad not to see Alanis or Sheryl Crow. Although I am glad that Janis is represented! Man, she should be around Joni Mitchell though. There's no way Joni Mitchell is THAT many positions "greater" than Janis. Aretha's there too :) Yay. Ooo, too bad Jefferson Airplane isn't on here just for Grace Slick's voice. God, that voice! AMAZING!

Of course Paul trails 5 spots behind John :) Poor guy. Wonder if he ever gets annoyed about it, or just accepts it? Probably accepts it. John's always been the higher rated musician. To me it just depends on what mood I'm in. I want something more serious, I go to John. Something fun? Go to Paul.

    I digress. Back on track.

Ugh, the Who at 13? Not cool. They should have made top ten. The fact Prince is number 7 pisses me off. What the hell? Number 7? Really? Above the Who? Yeah, not cool. Bob Dylan at number 2 is also displeasing to me. Sorry Dylan fans, but I really don't think that he deserves to be above Led Zeppelin. Actually, I don't think MJ deserves to be above Zeppelin either.

Actually, besides HUGE artists that truly did change music genres forever, I don't really see how you can rank all these guys. Really all the 50s artists should all be in the top 20 at least. Without them we wouldn't even have Rock N Roll as we do today! The Beatles of course deserve the number 1 spot. I don't care if you hate them, there is no way you cannot say that without them Rock would sound like it does today. Because it wouldn't.

So overall...not bad for a VH1 list. Usually they blow. They haven't been doing too bad at them lately. 1:00 AM, time for bed :)

  • 25 minutes to kill before Mad Men

    30. Aug. 2010, 2:01

Mad Men is on in 25 minutes, and I'm dreadfully bored. Ugh -_- So...let's just free write until it is on, shall we? See what kind of thoughts drip out of my brain about music :)

So what to write about...the first thing that pops in my head is The Beatles naturally. However, Janis Joplin just popped on my random shuffle, so now I'm purely focused on her. Holy crap that woman's voice is just out of control! Seriously, who did she have to sell her soul to in order to obtain those killer vocals?

I was recently reading about her, and saw that she was a huge outcast in high school. She went to her 10 year school reunion when she was 27 to rub her fame into the faces of those who made her an outcast. The interesting thing? She was still treated as an outcast. Even after getting all that fame, fortune, respect, and notoriety in the rock world, her former classmates were STILL cruel to her. Pretty interesting, if you ask me.

How about the fact that she died at age 27? Or the fact that so many rock stars died at age 27? It's such a waste. So much talent in those heads, and yet so many destructive tendencies that go along with those amazing thoughts and skills. I always wonder what would have happened to them if they would have stayed alive. I don't know how famous people do it. Most work so unbelievably hard for those years that they show the world what they've got, and then they either age gracefully and maintain their respect; fade off into obscurity and are left alone; or spiral down into a disastrous mess. It's amazing to me.

I wonder if people like Janis, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, etc. were allowed to look back at their lives, and were asked the question would you do it all again if they would? Would their personal sufferings be worth their becoming martyrs of the music world? Would the unbelievably huge cult followings and haunting aura their names alone inspire be worth it? You know, I think they would. I don't think they would regret a moment of their lives, and that they would do it all again. Maybe they'd want to tweak some things here and there, but I would stake money that they wouldn't want to change much if they got to see the legacy they left in their wake.

This is why I love free writing. You never know what on earth is going to dribble out of your head! I still have 10 minutes to kill though...crap. I have some political thoughts stirring in my head right now, but I'd prefer to stick to music. Well, here's something about a political band! I went to a bar last night, and saw a cover band. Their last song they played was Rage Against the Machine's Killing in the Name, and I pretty much felt like someone had shot adrenaline into my heart. Jesus, what a song!! That bass line in the beginning, the lyrics, the guitar, the "Fuck you I won't do what you tell me" at the end! It's such a high! Absolutely amazing :)

I can see why music can instigate riots. Songs like "Killing in the Name" just make you feel completely different! Although I can never, ever imagine how a song like Bill Haley And The Comets' Rock Around The Clock started that huge riot in German way back when. I don't even want to know what would happen if you put that crowd into some of the really intense metal audiences...yikes!

Heeeey Mad Men in 3 minutes! I'll tag this baby up, and that's that :)
