Fri 14 May – Metallica, Volbeat, High on Fire

I kinda feel sad reading all the reviews and negative comments about the gig.

But exactly what happened last friday? The thrash legends visited our small country after more than 10 years and they were incredible! I'd been waiting for this moment since i got to know them and they didn't disappoint me at all.

We got there at about 3:30PM. There had been a bunch of people at the gates by then. The good company made time fly pretty fast and finally, at 5PM we could get in the stadium. "A" sector, 2nd line - oh ,yeah!
High on Fire came first. They didn't really fit my taste. Oh, well - I was there for Metallica:) Volbeat was great, though. They deserve more attention for sure.

A few minutes after 9PM the usual start, The Ecstasy of Gold intoned. The crowd suddenly turned insane and they pushed me to the barrier. Thanks to them, I was able to see the whole gig from right in front of the stage. At first, Hetfield's voice seemed to be lost in all the noise, but then the sound-technicians fixed it. Lars did miss some beats, but at least he enjoyed what he was doing. I couldn't tell this about Kirk; maybe he was in a bad shape, but he was like "i'm here only because i have to". Rob was a monster as always with his 5-string bass and his typical moves. Doesn't matter what you say, he fits in the band.

About the setlist… I really don't know what people were thinking when they bought their tickets. No songs from Death Magnetic? On the World Magnetic Tour? Oh, please! All the new songs sounded awesome. So did the older ones. From Kill 'em All to The Black Album, we could hear almost everything. I would've put some other tracks from Master of Puppets (ehh, it's my fav album), but obviously, they can't play each of their songs in 2 hours. The Load/ReLoad and the St. Anger era was completely missed out, but somehow I didn't mind it at all. I don't say it was perfect, but it was very close:)

The organization of the show wasn't the best, but as it's there in every other review, I won't go in details.

I was bothered with only one thing. Around me, it seemed like only i knew the lyrics between two choruses. It was so weird. And I think Hetfield recognized it, too - or was it just my admiring look? Hmmm… Whatever… He is a cool guy:) Anyway, despite those few "I'm so drunk that I can't even stand" people, the audience was fine. I've heard that there was a 70-year-old man somewhere with standing tickets:)

Thanks to the 500 square-meter stage with one huge and two smaller screens, even the (less heavy) sitting audience could see the band. Ehh… the smaller screens were 200 square-meters. Incredible sizes! The pyrotechnics looked freakin' awesome. Too bad that there weren't any until One. Blasting fire, crackers, fireworks… It was amazing! The lights were Ok. I would've expected some laser show, though.

Altogether 41.000 people were there. The opinions about the show are very changable. Well, I enjoyed it very much and sang along every single song. (I didn't have too much voice the next day:)) It was a great experience and i had lots of memorable moments. I hope that many of you feel this way:)
