New Mixtape: Name Droppers

8. Dez. 2005, 20:26

I should have got out of bed and got ready for work half an hour ago, but just before I do, I'm issuing a challenge.

One of my favourite ongoing mixtape plans is "songs that mention other bands or artists". I have a list of about 45 songs that do this, but I want other people's ideas first (plus, I don't want to be late to work)

So, it turns out if you don't link journal entries to artists (and you post it at a time that is inconvenient for the US and the UK) then you don't get many people reading it except people you actually know. Who you could have emailed for mix tape advice (and have done, several times in the past).

So, here are Misstriggercut's and Xenex's selections, and my own list:

Weezer -In the Garage (mentions Kiss)

Custard - If Yr Famous and You Know It Sack Yr Band (I can't think of who that song mentions, and I can't find the CD at the moment. So I don't know if it is the song you're thinking of)

Self - Trunk Fulla Amps (mentions Freddie Mercury, ELO, Glen Danzig and Lenny Kravitz)

Without me by Eminem mentions Limp Bizkit and Moby if I remember correctly. There was another Eminem song that mentions the beastie boys, but I can't remember it.

There is an unholy amount of songs mentioning the Smiths or Morrissey. Off the top of my head I can think of two: Brand New's Mix tape ('and I'm sick of your tattoos and the way you always criticised the Smiths') and Dubstar's The day I see you again ('if the man you've grown to be's more Morrison than Morrissey'). Then there's Veruca Salt's With David Bowie and scarling's Crispin Glover, if you count him as a musician (he HAS released an album). Large parts of Mylo's Destroy rock & roll consist of nothing but namesdropping. Oh, and a rather new and fairly unknown one: The Indelicates' Waiting for Pete Doherty to die. I think this is a brilliant idea for a mix tape :)

They Might Be Giants claim to be The Replacements in the song Hi, We're the Replacements. They also mention Young Fresh Fellows and the dB's in Twisting in the Wind. Here's an idea for the worst mix tape ever: Bands who drop their own names.

SportModel said: Here's an idea for the worst mix tape ever: Bands who drop their own names. I've had that idea already. I had plans to come up with a mix of songs that mention the band's own name, but without the song sucking. But I could never think of more than two or three songs, so I gave up. Can you think of any ...?

Oh, and PS... Great songs, everyone, this is going to be an awesome mix!

As well as a great mix tape, this would be a great Last FM song tag

Tenacious D's Tribute Doesn't actually namedrop another artist, but it is thematically centered around Stairway to Heaven. Is that inside the theme? Also, I can think of Eminem mentioning the Spice Girls. Those british girlies are also featured in the Norwegian band Side Brok's Ein likandes kar (which also features other Norwegian artist Morten Abel)

salvadorbarry - you suggested I Don't Want to be Grant McClennan - Smudge How could I have forgotten that one? I love that song! AgentZero - YES! I should definitely tag all these songs. I haven't tried the tagging thing on here yet, but it'd be a good reason to start. ice cream - How could I forget that Tullycraft song? Half of their songs mention bands but that one crams in more than any other (except maybe Twee).

This is no longer a good idea for a tag, it now is a tag. I've started working through all the songs in this list and run out of enthusiasm. I'll get back to it tomorrow, but if you think of any more songs, add them to the tag and instead of me making a mix for whoever, we can have an online mix... anywhere, anytime.

Just FYI, Range Life mentions both the Smashing Pumpkins and the Stone Temple Pilots (they're foxy to me... are they foxy to you?).

Something Corporate's song Konstantine mentions Jimmy Eat World. Can't think of any others that aren't already tagged...

...mentions Kiss in Surrender. Also, the best hero-worshipping, ass-kissing song ever, the Replacements' Alex Chilton. As far as GOOD songs by bands singing about themselves, I have only come up with one so far: The Clash's This is Radio Clash. And please, for god's sake, nobody Wang Chung tonight.
