Just Like Quiet Riot Did

Ben Folds, Wed 25 June 2008, Shepherds Bush Empire

In response to Good gig, bad venue (ish) by Zoonie:

Ach, for my first Ben Folds gig I have to say I was kinda disappointed. Not being able to see *and* being tall made me feel both guilty and annoyed, and the sound was pretty crap. I guess I had high expectations, but didn't feel I could really enjoy myself for various crowd related reasons.

It was great to finally see him live, and was that (fomer drummer) Lindsay Jamieson who kept wandering on with the tambourine? I thought he'd slipped a disc.

I'm sort of ambivalent about the singalongyness. It's really fun (especially Ben's trademark three part "harmony" schtick) but also quite distracting. Would be OK if the sound was better I suppose. He wasn't always singing into his mic either!

Anyway, going back in November too, right at the front, on the left near the keys! Come on Ben, let's do it properly this time!

I have a kind of blind optimistic lack of critical judgement that helps me over the humps with things that had the potential to be average :) Basically, hey - you'll like this. I think it may amuse you somewhat! I wrote a blog post explaining why I have an almost blindingly naive love of Ben Folds http://moolies.typepad.com/moolies/2008/05/ben-folds.html here. It may contain content you find amusing for other reasons. It wasn't great, but I think I'm just too much of a fan to be that critical. Plus, with two young kids, astonishingly, I tried yesterday to remember the last gig I went to before this one - and totally failed to. So simply going out and experiencing live music of *any* sort is blissful. I'll give you a ping near November. Oh, there's a half way decent unofficial fan club run by some chap in the UK, called The Suburbs. they're a nice enough bunch, if a little... you know. Obsessed. URL below. TheSuburbs.org.uk

It's funny how music can grab you at certain stages of your life and it's like "Phwooooom! Wow OK you want to go, let's go. Aieeee!" and it's amazing. I started listening to The Lemonheads when I met my girlfriend a year ago and she forced me to love them. They've now surpassed any other musician I've listened to (followed closely by Mr Folds of course [I can't bring myself to call him Ben]) it's an association and timing thing, I think; on top of incredible music that I find much harder to describe than psychological things. Yeah, would be good to meet up and swap notes before the next one, thanks for stopping by. I liked your Fred Jones ref in that blog post by the way. I was begging for him to play that, it was a rather strange setlist.

Nah. Lindz is workin on his own stuff in Nashville. Tambo-Man is someone completely different. If you're not enthralled by front row left side seats at a Ben show next time I will be shocked. But. If the sound is shite well then, sometimes the entire show is off. But I've never had that problem...with a Ben gig anyway. But. Audiences can really drag it down. and thanks Zoonie for pluggin the burbs. Surely Andy'll like the free advertisement (tho, all our adverts are free). :D And "obsessed" would probably be fitting.

You see how I distanced myself from the word "obsessed" there. ...checks LastFM stats... Oh no. Not obsessed at all. Ahem.
