  • Warped at the Tweeter Center? Whaaaat?

    13. Aug. 2007, 1:11

Thu 9 Aug – Vans Warped Tour '07

So my girlfriend Nicole and I got there at around 9:30-10:00, expecting the event to be in the parking lot. We soon discovered that the parking lot was being used for... well... parking. Confused, we connected with one of her friends, and a whole bunch of HER friends, and waited around for doors to the actual venue to open. Finally, at 11:30, the doors were open, and we were unleashed into the venue, which had been turned into a punk-rock theme park. The main Tweeter Center stage AKA "The Cave" was used as the Smartpunk Stage, where some smaller bands played, and much of the seats were used to get out of the sun. (The weather was phenomenal. No clouds, not too much humidity.) We walked all the way up past the seats, and past the grass, to an area that overlooked a large blacktop, where they were setting up stages and booths. "WE FOUND WARPED TOUR!" said Katie, Nicole's friend.

We went down past the concession stands, and to the picnic area, and discovered that they hadn't opened the doors yet. So we waited around. Some more. At least this area was in the shade.

When they finally opened the doors, everyone funneled in, and then dispersed to do their own thing. Music started pretty much right away, as everyone crowded around the big inflatable thing that lists the schedule. After much battling, I finally made it close enough to snap a picture of it, so I would know who was playing and when.

The first band we saw was Amber Pacific. We used their set as an opportunity to get against the barrier, because New Found Glory were coming up next. I admit, I don't know much (anything) about them, or their music, but they played pretty well, and their lead singer was all up against the barrier with the crowd for a bit and stuff. They put on a pretty good show.

Then there was a short wait, before New Found Glory came out to play. I had never seen them before, but Nicole has seen them 30something times. When they began playing, I understood why. They were fantastic! They played Hit or Miss, which was pretty much my 7th grade anthem. (And also the only NFG song I know the words to) Jordan was down by the barricade, and I even got to sing some words into the mic. (Thankfully it was this song, and not one I didn't know haha). Throughout the whole set, Hayley Williams of Paramore was back/sidestage watching, and messing around with the crowd, getting them psyched up. Jordan even threw in the chorus of Emergency into one of their songs. It was a blast!

After NFG's set ended, we had some time to kill, so we hung around, ate some junk food, and hydrated ourselves. Then Katie left to wait for the Paramore meet and greet, and Nicole and I went to the NFG meet and greet. We made our way through the line, and then met them, and they said they would be back in the fall with Senses Fail. That would be a show to see for sure! After we got their autographs and such, we went to the Paramore meet and greet, which was still going on. We then made our way through that line, and when I got to the band, they were all extremely nice, and talkative. Then Hayley looked at me and said, "Hey I saw you in the front during NFG! They rule." That caught me TOTALLY off guard that she recognized me hahah.

After the meet and greet, Nicole and I made our way to the myspace tent to catch NFG play an acoustic set. We got there pretty early, so we were able to be up front for that too haha. While we were waiting, we listened to Coheed and Cambria play on a nearby stage just outside the tent. They were very good. They played my two favorite songs by them, Everything Evil and A Favor House Atlantic.

After Coheed finished their set nearby, NFG came out, sans drums and bass, and proved they are just as good acoustic as they are electric. I got a pretty sick video of Too Good to Be

We had time to kill again, so we went to the Smartpunk stage to watch All Time Low. We did so from the seats, but I still really enjoyed their set. They covered the song Damnit which was tons of fun!

After they finished, we had even more free time, so we hung around some more, and looked at merch from various bands. We made our way to the main stage, where we sat on the pavement and relaxed for a bit, while listening to Circa Survive. Anthony Greene had some hilarious ideas to get the crowd involved with the band, which included a crowd surfing contest, the challenge of making "triangle pits" (as opposed to circle pits) and even blowing up condoms, writing your phone number on them, and floating them to the front of the stage to be entered into a drawing to win a free tee shirt. What a showman hahahah.

After Circa Survive finished, Killswitch Engage were due up. Nicole, Katie and I made our way into the crowd so we could get barrier for Paramore. Due to the genere of music Killswitch fits into, we were a bit worried that the pit would be really rough. It was. But there weren't many crowd surfers, so we were able to deal with it. The band's set was okay. Again, I don't know their music, nor am I a fan, so It's hard to say if they did a good job or not. The fans in the crowd seemed really into it though, so that was good.

Well, we survived the pit, and even made barrier for Paramore. Relieved when the pit calmed down, we thought we were in for a pretty smooth ride. We were wrong. Their pit was even rougher than Killswitch's! There was less moshing and shoving, but 10x more crowd surfing, and apparently Paramore fans don't know how to crowdsurf properly, and love kicking people in the face. And security don't know how to let the crowd surfers come to them, so they LEAN INTO THE CROWD TO GRAB THE PEOPLE. Morons would just lean right over people, and stand on the barrier in peoples way. So I spent much of Paramore's set looking at a sweaty yellow jersey. But when the security people weren't in my way, I very much enjoyed watching Hayley Williams command the stage and the audience. Her voice sounds every bit as good as it does on the albums, and the band pulls their weight just as well. They played all the hits, which was good because although I've heard all their music, the songs I know the words to are the popular ones haha. Their set consisted of Emergency, Pressure, Misery Business, and my all time favorite song by them, CrushCrushCrush plus a couple other songs that I can't remember. They were amazing.

After they finished, we made our way to the parking lot, where we hung out in the back of Katie's friend's pickup for roughly an hour before we decided the traffic had started moving enough to join in. Then, tired, sunburnt, and bruised, we made our way home.

The experience was fantastic. I admit that before going, I was really mad thatAlkaline Trio and Funeral for a Friend had dropped off the tour a mere 2 days before our date, but once I got there, all resentment I had faded, and I had an amazing time. I can't wait for next year!

    So this things pretty neat.

Except, if my iTunes is on shuffle, and I skip lots of songs, the software will freeze :-(

    Pain in the ass.
