so on the 8th may i went to see okkervil river at cargo in east london. it was a fantastic show at an incredibley small kitschy venue in shoreditch which took me ages of wandering around to find.

somehow i managed to get in early while others got kicked out to wait in line outside. i think the management thought i was a reviewer or something because i looked quite smart with my hair done all twisty and i was wearing dark jeans, my jawbreaker shirt and a corduroy blazer. well, i wasn't going to correct them so i just hung out at the bar with a load of americans.

the support acts were... interesting. the first was pretty much straight folky pop music, they were called the left outsides i believe and it was a girl with violin and a boy with acoustic guitar. i didn't really like them. their songs dragged. the next act was a guy called darren hayman i believe. he really rocked it out on a mandolin to kick off and i thought that was pretty cool. he had a song about peter gabriel taking a break from music which was quite amusing. i think most of his songs were meant to be humourous. i didn't like them all but he had a few fans in the crowd.

finally, okkervil took the stage. i was glad to see that they had brought their trumpet, a steal guitar, accordian and all the trimmings. i can't remember the exact setlist (and i'm not too familiar with their early songs but i'll try!). now, i didn't consider myself a big okkervil river fan but i thought black sheep boy was a very decent concept album which is the main reason i trekked it all the way to london to see them... i wasn't disappointed.

i met a boy just before okkervil river started playing. that was fun. they eventually they came out. the boy told me that the lead singer looked like a fraggle rock character. i couldn't see it personally and they kicked off with a king and a queen... i can't remember what they played in order so i'm just going to list songs for my memory:

    - a king and a queen
    - the lastest toughs
    - missing children
    - a stone
    - our so-called friend
    - black sheep boy
    - for real
    - black
    - ended with (pre-encore) so come back i am waiting

the other songs i either can't remember accurately (i was on the guinness all night) or wasn't too familiar with.

i thought they were fantastic. they really hit my soul. i mean, that line in our so-called friend (which i'd liked but never particularly liked) where will says "there's no room in your heart for even this finely sharpened dart" just hit me. the boy i was with was american and knew most of their songs because he was really into them. i was hoping that they would play black as it's my favourite by them, mainly for the "wreck his life the way that he wrecked yours". they did and it was fantastic. for real really was a highlight as well.

they also played this song which i'm guessing is one of their older ones where will stops halfway through and gives a whole explanation before going back into it. it was fantastic.

unfortunately i had to leave one song into the encore in order to get the last train home from paddington which was very annoying. i will definitely be seeing them when they come back to the uk. they said they were in the studio working on their new lp and would be back when it comes out. i can't wait.
  • I never thought it would happen...

Fishing For A Dream came on randomly as I was walking to work so I walked in with a massive great big stupid grin on my face.

I don't know why that song does that to me.
