One of the benefits of running alpha thru my storage boxes of CDs has been reaquainting myself with some old friends. That Led Zeppelin I haven't listened to in a coon's age, or the one reissue Doors I got to replace a casette tape worn down by school day road trips.

Then there are the other guys. The 'what-the-heck-was-I-thinking' CDs that the re-sale shop wouldn't even take back in a bundle. And my favorites, the CDs I may not even recognize that I stick in and for whatever reason, be it the time of day or my passing age or the price of tea in Texas, I get the 'where-have-you-been-all-my-life' whammy.

I got that last week with the Tarbox Ramblers. I'm sure i ran across this Boston bar band at KRFC, maybe even rescued the disc from the discard bin after an all too brief on the new Album shelf without sufficient love to find a home on our permanent record. I didn't use the disc for target practice, so I musta thought it was OK, but didn't leave an immediate impression.

Now, I gotta tell you, I can't get enough of A Fix Back East. Take one part Dock Boggs, one part Crawlin King Snake, one part hillbilly stomp and one part steaming Memphis waterfront and we're off on our own long strange Americana journey. It's alot of traditional tunes, in modern interpretation.

I just puzzles me I didn't "get it" at the time. I mean, the disc got an All Music Guide AMG music pick. Story on wikipedia is Robert Plant picked up on them on tour a couple years back. Of my recent favs, they're definately in the mix with, say, Captain Yonder and Graham Lindsey for originality and wierdness.

No idea what Michael Tarbox has been up to since. I see on their website they have a few dates this summer, but nowhere outside EDT. oh, well, it's nice to make their acquaintance again.
