I've been complaining about the paucity of interesting music releases all year. Finally, there seems to be signs of relief for me. Four out of five of my top listens this week represent that.

For starters, color me impressed with Jaspects's latest album The Polkadotted Stripe. I've been a fan of the Atlanta's group mix of straight ahead/acid jazz and humor for years. In 2008 they surprised me with the single "Unifunk". This punchy, jazz/electronic dance track set the stage for their new blend of jazz/hip hop/elctronic music with a bit of help from fellow Atliens Janelle Monáe and PJ Morton. Not perfect but yummy.

Next up is independent soul/r&b artist Choklate. She builds on her underground debut with the competent To Whom It May Concern. Again, she delivers more of what's missing from black/urban radio.

I discovered Karma Stewart by accident although she's featured on the Platinum Pied Pipers (PPP) latest Abundance which I already own. Sadly, that album lacks focus and I never paid much attention to Karma's vocals until now. Powerful and full of energy, her soul/funk complements the styles of Janelle Monáe and Outkast. She's hopefully set for bigger things. The Karma EP (produced by PPP) is available on Karma's MySpace page. Worth it for the track "Look" alone.

I've listened to Manners by Passion Pit casually for a couple of weeks (propelled by their awesome video for The Reeling). This past week, Manners suddenly consumed me and I ended up playing it enough to fall in love with it. Part indie rock with pop and electronic overtones.

Cool to hear your update. I too had been feeling that 2009 wasn't producing gem after gem like 08' had, everything has been just 'aight' and I haven't really fallen in <3 with anything. Passion Pit's new stuff is awesome!! I will have to give Chocolate another try, since you saw improvement and you don't seem to be easily fooled. Heads up... new Little Dragon should be by summers end.
