Hey, late response here. I read your reviews about shinee and f(x), still have to listen to almost everything that shinee released last year. I want to believe that sm uses f(x) to experiment with music and concepts that lately has become something really likeable. By the way now I can't stop listening to girl's day (Hyeri is adorable in her dress while dancing in don't forget me) and I'm waiting for winner to debut properly. Are you familiar with korean "indie" music? Such as glen check, urban zakapa, summer here kids or 모임 별.

Likewise. (Tho I'm not familiar with most of it ;-] ). In fact, it was cool to see what I've been listening to myself. I figured with you and MusicBizStudent using Last.fm, it must be worth checking out.

Whoa, Jakob! Thanks for sharing your article, glad I read it, i like that your not the typical k-pop fan. I started with this genre on 2006 and their evolution is pretty remarkable, they always make me curious to see what's next, who is going to get more attention, etc. Sorry it took me so long to answer you back, let's keep in touch! : )

Sorry, man. The new gmail sucks and the comment emails go to other classification. I have the Spa and treatment, but it is in just one track. If you can give a couple of days I can separate the tracks and send it to you.

  • steveotron

Me too. I kind of feel like Inc's album kind of got forgotten by a lot of people, but I'm still playing it frequently. I don't follow K-Pop as much as I do other genres, but I'll probably try a little harder this year. I'll definitely check out the rest of the Girl's Day discography.

Great piece you wrote. Nice choice on number 1. I love to listen to acoustic/acapella versions of my favorite k-pop songs coz its only then you get to listen to it stripped naked of its heavy production, where the (usually) beautiful melody hides under. Or even become a whole different song altogether, like Miniskirt.

I'm looking forward to it. :)

Its only January, and we're already getting stuff like Ga-in's Fxxk U. If this is a sign of things to come, i'd say this is going to be a great year for K-pop.

lol. the 생각의 여름 play count is partly due to some bug on my iPod's part... but sure. 생각의 여름 is the moniker of one guy writing and singing pristine folk. He has two albums out. The first album is a sweet collection of songs and the second one is like a mini-suite, with just one track 18 minutes long divided into 12 sections. Anywho--

    Januar 2014
  • linppl

But I can relate to your feeling. Different culture is probably the reason I mostly listen to western and japanese music instead of C-pop even underground Chinese music, when the swears come up in a Chinese rap song it just sounds embarrassing.

    Januar 2014
  • linppl

The K-pop music is cool is probably because their best tracks are mostly bought from western songwriters and producers and then korean music company transform into the ways that suit the icons' images so teenagers would fall for it?

    Januar 2014
  • linppl

Could I ask you what appeals to you the most in K-pop and J-pop music? Just curious about it.

    Januar 2014
  • adreder

So it was you who wrote in noisey about k-pop. Somehow it makes sense to me that someone who listen to Eno and Basinski can listen to koreans making pop music and focus on the song and not just look down on it. There are good song and bad ones too. That's what happens everywhere. By the way, it was nice seeing Smile Again and Rum Pum Pum Pum in the list. Which other songs from f(x) and shinee did you liked?

  • helloimjoshua

i'm sure you'll disagree but i kind of thought this was a pretty bad year for k-pop in comparison to previous years. last year was especially amazing imo... so many amazing rookie groups.

I just heard IU and she sure sounds like shiina. Although I love shiina more when she is passionate haha, her recent collaboration with Nakata Yasutaka and Towa Tei is surprising and kinda funny, in a good way.

i'm just talking shouts on artist pages, song pages, etc., like every musician i respect or track i dig you've already gotten to their shoutbox! so props. i dig yr writing but i agree with AdamsFM below- twigs' EP2 and that whole sonic universe is just unbelievably fresh to me, even having listened to hella witch, drag, dark electronic shit or whatever you want to call it. her whole explanation behind the album, like having this constant rumble throughout in part because of her chronic tinnitus, is pretty interesting too.

  • AdamsFM

Hmmm, I can see the dark Witch-House influence, but that's probably why I like it so much (because I adore that sound). But can you really come up with something similar sounding that was released years ago? I think Arca is one of the best up-and-coming experimental electronic producers - &&&&& sounds like nothing I've ever heard before and his production on Yeezus was fab too. This track in particular is mind-blowing. I think if Twigs and Arca keep collabing something groundbreaking is going to happen.
