Finally all Myspace users can create their own playlists (not only the ones in the U.S.), and bands can do this as well now - great stuff!
So I went ahead, and in the meantime there is a dozen playlists to be found on the Bluezz Bastardzz Myspace profile, my ZZ Top cover band. New additions are Die ganz neue Fuddel-Rock IV packed with guitar virtuoso music by Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and the likes. On Blues I mainly added old blues music by Leadbelly, the early B.B. King, Elmore James etc. Southern Rock of course features Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, The Allman Brothers Band and others from that genre.
I searched through the songs of the Bluezz Bastardzz top friends on Myspace and also added bands from our setlist to the Bluezz Bastardzz' Favorites playlist which has 100 songs now, i.e. more than eight hours of continuous playback including ZZ Top, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Gov't Mule and the like.
The Female Vocalists playlist is full as well, so I created separate ones e.g. with Kate Bush, Tori Amos and Susan Tedeschi. Recently I added another long one with Canadian Girls including Alannah Myles, Alanis Morissette, Dalbello, Avril Lavigne, Céline Dion and others.
My other band Indigo Rocks has a Top Friends playlist with 100 songs as well with many blues rock artists like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmie Vaughan, Los Lobos, Doyle Bramhall II, The Derek Trucks Band, Stevie Salas or Alvin Youngblood Hart.
You can click on the cross symbol in the player to turn random play on or off. When the new Myspace audio player will be ready, you can also add several playlists to one large queue in the player and have them all played back randomly which almost feels like a Last.fm radio station then... ;-)
Another interesting update concerning band profiles is the new upload manager. You can upload 100 songs now and choose either 10 (old profile version) or 25 (new profile version) public songs for the player on your profile from this pool. The maximum file size is 50 MB and includes upload formats like WAV, FLAC, APE and many others. So it's possible to save one encoding step and use uncompressed and/or lossless tracks. This should result in a better sound without transcoding artifacts, as Myspace encodes them again to MP3 after the upload.
The old user groups on Myspace were deactivated during the recent site updates, but now you can create threads with your favorite themes. I added some for Sonny Landreth Fans, David Lindley Fans, Ry Cooder Fans, ZZ Top Fans and of course for Last.fm. They work like the personal stream on your Myspace homepage, so you can easily add videos, songs, photos, links or comments to them. But you have to be logged in to see the embedded content.
For more info on the recent changes at Myspace see also my thread in the Last.fm News forum.
Have fun listening!
