How's the shop coming along? Seven semesters is pretty impressive, but I'm guessing you'd like to do something else eventually. :] Which degrees are you working on? Well, one lead has become too possible to mention. I don't want to jinx it quite yet. I'm not too excited about going from $11 an hour to minimum wage, but if I get the job I have a job. At a place I spend a reasonable amount of time at anyway. If your shop is really going to be a fuck ton better than paradise ridge, I have no doubts you'll do just fine. Also, you're correct in remembering that I'm not in school at the moment, but I've pretty well got my semester lined up in the spring. I'm excited to be going back, not excited to pay for it. Going to try and get into Adv. Wallclimbing, Literary Theory, Int. Fiction and Animals In Captivity. Perhaps Ceramics, since that made a comeback... I thought it was gone forever.

Ah, I know exactly where your shop is. Good luck getting everything set up for the 2nd, I'll try and spread some words around town. Are you just selling? Or are you going to buy and trade also? It's a little inconvenient that you're opening right across from Paradise Ridge, but I can say I don't find them that appealing and I never see anyone in the store. I worked at the co-op as a dishwasher from about summer of last year to mid-spring this year. The discount was great, the people were pretty cool, but there were a surprising number of politics. Enough that I never bothered to change my position. Do you enjoy teaching Comm class? How are your grad studies going?

Very cool that you take classes that interest you just for the sake of learning. I would like to do that with some classes. Kind of what I want to do with Arabic. I mean I don't need to get a B.A. in the language, but I really feel the urge to do so. Hopefully I can start working toward that again sooner rather than later. Too bad the closest university doesn't teach it.

I can understand being fed up with the system. I imagine I would be in the same boat. But maybe the teaching system would need more people like you. Or maybe some started off the same and became aware they couldn't make as much change as they would like. :/ That's a great business idea! I think my ultimate dream job would be to own a record store. Of course it would have to support me monetarily. Just sounds wonderful. I hope your business goes through the roof. I was in Jordan on a study away program for six weeks in May-June of 2007. Then I visited Kuwait for ten days in December-January 2007/2008. I'm like you in that I want to travel everywhere. Or just about everywhere. It's fascinating to see other areas, cultures, etc. Latin American History is great! I had a Latin American Politics class. Very interesting. I wish I could have had more similar classes. Another favorite class of mine was Political Violence and Terrorism.

I definitely enjoy two of your three undergrad majors. I'm sure elementary ed. isn't too bad either. Yeah, I was taught Arabic for six weeks in Jordan, and I've taken the 102 course. I find the language to be very interesting, and I would love to be proficient. Plus for certain government jobs Arabic and poli sci go together so well and look great together. I like a lot of history and poli sci, but I'm more interested in the last 200 years or so than anything. I guess I enjoy comparative politics a lot. Sorry to hear you couldn't see Greg Brown live this time. Hopefully we both get to the next time. I understand not having disposable income! Good luck with your business. If you don't mind me asking, what does/will the business involve?

Philosophy. Nice! Well, I have a B.A. in Political Science, and someday (sooner rather than later) I would like to get a Master's in History or Poli Sci/International Relations. I also want to study Arabic more. Anyway, my cousin was telling me I should teach children, and I gave the idea some consideration, but I've found out now that even with my B.A. I still need a year or two more in elementary education specifically. Kind of a bummer. Right now I'm on the search for a job. Any job just about. I'm also a part-time tutor. Currently I only have junior high students.

Aww, sorry to hear that. I hope you are feeling better soon! Also hope you can make Seattle at least. Would really be too bad if we both miss out on seeing Greg. Talk to you later.

Yeah, that lineup is awesome! The Pixies show was great, we ended up getting spot right in front by Kim and David. Their set list was great and we managed to clap and yell enough for two encores and then after the show I got one of David's drumsticks... the whole trip was well worth it. I guess they're selling live cds of all the shows for $25... I'm trying to decide. How was your show last week? Also, does KUOI ever need djs mid season? Anthony became the manager this year right?

This makes me insanely sad, but I can't make the Greg Brown shows. Money is the main issue right now, but a conflict in schedule too. I hope you go and have a blast though! Would have been cool to meet up of course. Maybe some other time. :) If you get a chance to meet Greg please get a photo for me...or something! ;-) Hope your doing well.

Yeah, I'm really going. :) I actually thought it was going to fall through because of how long the drive is and potentially not having enough money, but it all worked out. I'm pretty excited, I'll let you know how the show is. Oh and you don't have to go out of your way to figure out what you played or anything, if you remember a few artists that's plenty good too.

Well, the intention with the English is creative writing and I'm pretty bent on keeping it that way... I guess disillusion is a plague of any artistic career choice, but I'm also looking into doing something involving wildlife research. I suppose I got lucky with Moscow, meeting a lot of people, I think it's the community that keeps me occupied, rather than places in Moscow. Work keeps me pretty busy, other than that, I like to see the shows that happen at Mikey's, wander around, would like to do more hiking... etc. You?

That is too bad. It would work out much better if the shows were a week later. Thanks for the info, Zach. Just looking into the flights and taking the Greyhound it doesn't seem like it will be too bad to still do all three shows. I might only get to make Portland and Seattle though. I'll have to see how things go with the job hunt and possibly moving into a new place around October. I'll let you know as my plans get more fully fleshed out. I still hope to make those three though.

Hi Zach, that sounds like a fun trip! Yeah, the price did seem really cheap. I'm sure it's went up now considering it's getting closer to the date, but I can't afford to buy the plane ticket until next month probably. Thanks for the shout. Hope you can get back into the swing of things after that month long trip. I find it to be difficult sometimes. Talk later.

Wow, I can probably name my own price of $170 or so for a flight into ID. It would be roundtrip to Moscow and back though.

Thanks a bunch for the link! I'm not online much right now, but hopefully I'll get those shows uploaded for you soon. Or would you prefer me to send discs with the files in flac format? I'll check into possible places to fly into. I basically want to do whatever will be cheaper. Obviously. Right now I plan on going to Eugene and then the shows after, but if you go to Bend let me know. I'll try to swing that one too then. Definitely. I imagine this could be a really fun Northwest Greg Brown mini-tour. And if we could travel together that would be a lot more fun than taking the Greyhound everywhere. Although I've had my fair share of Greyhound trips. If you hear about the tickets being on-sale let me know. I imagine they aren't yet. Talk soon. Peace.

Actually, I just remembered that Christopher the Conquered played at the Maintenance Shop at Iowa State this past winter. I usually go to a lot of the shows there but I didn't go to see him because no know I knew had heard of him. Now I wish I had. I am def going to have to keep a look out for him in the future

Yes, I made it to 80/35. I think my favorites were Califone, Earl Greyhound and Dawes. I had never heard of Christopher the Conquerer before, but he is fantastic. He really put on a great show. I thought the Walkmen were great, too. But I was disappointed with Yo La Tengo and Modest Mouse. Oh well. I am looking forward to next year.

I had a good time at 80/35, more so the second day...even with the rain. Dawes, and Califone were my two favorite bands. Yo La Tengo, was very very boring, but I guess there is a reason why I haven't bought one of their albums since the mid-90's. That was the last time I saw them too. I didn't stick around much on Saturday, saw Yo La, and William Elliot Whitmore and then went home. Didn't even see Spoon. We were there for Dawes on Sunday, when home and napped then went back down for Califone and stayed for Modest Mouse...which was ok.

That's the plan! Really looking forward to seeing Yo La Tengo, Holly Golighty and the Brokeoffs, and Califone. Hopefully it will be a good time. Last year was great so I am looking forward to it. I just hope it doesn't rain as it has been raining here nearly every day since the the first of the month. Hopefully the (long) drive for you will be well worth it :)

Hey Zach (I actually don't know if you prefer that shortened form so let me know). I actually have not been to the northwest. I'm excited about that. Hopefully I can see Seattle a bit at the very least. Camping sounds pretty cool if you want to do that. I definitely wanted to ask you if you want to meet up and hang out either before, after, or during the concerts (if not all three). I'm probably going to fly out, but I'm not positive. I was thinking of flying to Seattle and then taking the Greyhound to either Bend or Eugene (don't know if I'm doing all 4 or just 3). Then I would take the Greyhound to all after, but if we could ride together that would be good for both of us I'm sure. Just let me know your plans, and once I've got more concrete ideas I'll let you know. I'll also make copies of the few boots I have. I would love to get the 1992 show you have as well, so thanks for that offer. Do you have Greg's first album?

I am really looking forward to seeing Califone, but also Yo La Tengo who I haven't seen since the mid-90's, Modest Mouse and The Dawes, William Elliot Whitmore...basically all of the bands you mentioned, that's funny. There's a local guy playing Cashes Rivers, that I'm interested in seeing too. If you don't have a hotel room yet, you should try priceline, you can probably make an offer for pretty cheap, anywhere you stay in the Downtown area is close enough to walk to the show.

Nice. I imagine he was a great live act every time you saw him. I'm getting a few bootlegs of Greg's soon, so if you want to hear those just let me know. I sent out emails about all of the shows, but I only heard back about the Eugene show. It's a go, but tickets aren't on sale yet. No surprise there. I'm only a maybe with the Petty concert right now, but I'm hoping to make it. I definitely need to see him live and DBT touring with him is an added bonus. Once I know more about the other Greg concerts I'll add those as well. I figure if I'm going all the way out to the northwest I might as well. He has a concert in Iowa today, but I don't have the money to go there right now. :( From what I know he still has gigs in Iowa City. Hopefully I'll hear more about them now that I've joined his yahoo list.

No problem. When I saw the dates out that way I thought of you. lol I forget, but when you saw Greg in Iowa was that your only time? Or have you seen him multiple times? I'll let you know as soon as I hear. I saw on his Facebook page a mention of the Seattle show, but I think the venue might be wrong. Anyway, I imagine I'll get emails after the holiday. I'm really convinced I'll be out for at least Portland and Seattle, but if I'm there I'm going to try for all of them.

Hmm, actually I'm not sure Greg Brown is playing all these places since I don't see the info at some of the sites. But pollstar has the dates. I've emailed venues to find out for sure.
