Ambient & Psy 2008 In Review

24. Feb. 2009, 17:25

2008 was a great year for psychill, I tried to keep a list of everything that came out. Keep in mind this list mainly focuses on psychill, I know there were a lot more releases in ambient, downtempo, idm, psytrance, etc.

(My 10 favorite albums of 2008 are in bold)

    I think that:
Mauxuam - Viceversa is more dub than IDM
Lauge - Sundays is more downtempo than psy-ambient
Morphonix - Off The Grid is more psytrance, psybreaks than ambient

so that is vision from my side =P

I edited the list as per psy-eternity's instructions, adding a dub section. also added Vibrasphere - Lungs of Life. I could've sworn that Digital Samsara was a 2008 release, many other sites say it was released in March 08, good album though.

Very nice list. Heard nearly 90% of this. However, categorization here is solely personal and utterly dependent. I don't consider a lot of the albums mentioned in the psy-ambient section to actually be psy-ambient.

M-Sphere album to me sounds like a generic lounge/downtempo.
Nearly same goes for the likes of Isaak Hypnotizer, Digital Samsara, Waterjuice, M-Seven, M-Sphere, James Murray (normal ambient to me) and many others, which generally lie within "chillout/downtempo/lounge/dub" range-span. Loads of great music, but definitely not exactly "psychedelic". To me personally, the only 100% "psychedelic ambient" artist would be Aes Dana (Vincent Villuis). I have never heard anything as deep and brooding if we're talking about ambient music. It has no downtempo, dub or lounge influences that 90% of the projects named in the above psy-ambient have, just pure psychedelic flow. From the whole list, the closest pretender to the psychillI(psybient) from my angle would be Will-O'-The-Wisp - really deep and profound music, the least influenced by lounge and general downtempo genres.

Ian Ion's sound, on the other hand, isn't very peculiar to general ambient (a lot of the tracks are really hypnotic and exotic), so I'd personally refer him to psybient. Pretty much the same would go for Indigo Egg, although this time more with downtempo influences.

That's what I think about whole categorization matter.
But for the rest - great job. And of course there's a whole lot of other great psy edm releases (from goa and psyprog, to darkpsy and psytech). More than 70 names in total.

yeah, I tend to use psy-ambient/psychill as umbrella terms for generally psychedelic sounding downtempo/ambient. however, yes like you said, this is completely subjective and personal, which is partly why I enjoy all of these genres, because they affect everyone differently, but it's nice to hear other opinions so thanks for sharing yours :)
