To be honest I don't know the origin. I took it from Max Capacity's blog -- he makes a lot of distorted glitch and pixel art and plenty of great gifs.

This was back in 1992 - there weren't any tracker formats which offered more than 4 channels. OctaMED did come a few years later which did offer 8 out of the Amiga's 4 channel hardware, but that was it :) The original MIDI files were 24 voice poly, written specifically for the LAPC-1 sound card which was made by Roland using their synthesizer technology from the MT32/D10 etc. Oh course, we had to use one of the 4 channels for sound effects too don't forget ;)

Fair enough. Though I think a lot of new EBM is described as industrial because people seem to have forgotten the term "motorik", which has been used to describe everything from Kraftwerk to old school Detroit techno. To me it implies rhythms that recall mass production etc. Those early techno producers were surrounded by (now defunct) car factories. When Laibach's output became increasingly dance-oriented, they described disco as being "industrial by other means". I think it ultimately comes down to the difference between the afficionados such as your or I who know industrial music's history, and Joe Bloggs on the street who will use words like "mechanistic" and "industrial" to describe these jackhammer beats he's hearing when they play Combichrist down at the goth club.

Right, but if noise is related to the industrial genre, I think EBM should be too. I think it has more in common with industrial than neofolk does, but no one ever questions the industrial/neofolk link.

yes, I agree about noise, power electronics and related genres, though of course, that is an older genre than industrial itself, I kind of see it as the genre industrial evolved from. Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music isn't too far off either genre. No, industrial isn't all about imitating factory noises, but I do think that is a somewhat valid way to simplify how industrial sounds to someone not into the genre.

Well I find that "industrial" is valid not just as a genre name but as an adjective. I don't know what your views on power noise are, but I find that in terms of how it sounds, it's possibly the most industrial-sounding music out there. Whereas industrial as a genre wasn't 100% about imitating factory noise, it was about experimenting with many different sounds, so one may as well discard the term entirely and just call TG etc. "experimental". Btw I think I left a post back on the "not industrial" page explaining how industrial is undeniably linked to the stuff they play in clubs nowadays, I just wanna add that the best EBM acts descrive themselves simply as EBM, and never mention industrial. It's a breed apart.

Hey there. We have similar taste and you sound like you'd be fun to have a pointless argument with over the definition of industrial :)

Hi, I see you're a member of the Swans and related projects group... well, I'm on a kind of mission to try and get images of Jarboe/Gira voted to the top of the Skin images instead of the Skunk Anansie woman who currently dominates this page, so I'm slowly sending this message to all members of this group. All you have to do to help is go to the Skin page and vote down all the pics of the Skunk Skin and vote up all the pics of the Skin we know and love. I know it's a pain to vote down every Skunk pic ahead of the Skin pics, but it's only way to get 'our' Skin to the top, and we'll see the picture we like in our profile. Geeky? Probably! Sorry if you get this twice, but it's hard to keep track!
