East 17 and other shameful things

Thu 7 Jun – East 17

HAHAHAHA…hahahah…….a…………

Prior to the show, we had a coffee at Dome in Freo. While there, we checked out local people passing by & tried to guess who would be attending the show with us. Our usual guesses were old grannies with white hair, but really we knew the chances were better that we'd see people (women) there our own ages. Finally we headed for Metro's. My friend was a bit worried we'd be the only people in the venue. hahaha. I said they'd have had to cancel the show if it was just two people going ;) Thankfully when we got in there, it was already quite crowded. I definitely wouldn't say it was a sold out show though. We spotted some guys in the crowd who had the funny East 17 'sock hats' on, and it was quite moving really. Sniffle. hehe

While we waited for the main event, we were treated to a DJ's set of plenty of dorky 90s tunes, but seriously, some of them are so shockingly bad. These were songs I had tried desperately to forget all about all those years ago after I first heard them. Last night, I was reminded of numerous horrors including "Cotton Eye Joe" (Rednex), "Wannabe" (Spice Girls), "The Sign" (Ace of Base), "Back for Good" (Take That) and, quite frankly, other songs that were far, far worse than those and that I've already managed to scrub from my brain once more. haha. The scary thing was, my friend knew all the words…to all these shocking songs. Don't get me wrong, I do love good 90s dorkiness. But there's such a thing as bad 90s dorkiness too. We heard a lot of both kinds last night. At times I was literally shuddering from the disgusting sounds I was hearing. ;)

East 17 finally came on stage at about 10pm (OMG, it's a schoooooooool night people!) and it was lots of fun. They played some songs that sounded pretty crap and weren't very good for a boy band to perform (i.e. you couldn't hear the music that well and it was all vocals, and not even any harmonising). Anyway, the highlights were definitely "Deep", "It's Alright" and "Stay Another Day" (the last two were what made up the encore). The boys only played for an hour but quite frankly that was enough for me. haha. I'm glad the show ended on a sentimental note with those two super dorky-but-in-a-good-way songs. ;) And now, I shall leave you with some supreme dorkiness, just to take you back to the early 1990s (sigh, what a greatly bad era):
