NorthByNotheast, Toronto In June

I'm examining my calendar and realizing that there is far, far too many great bands passing through Toronto in June. Normally this would be a good thing, but I have limited time in my schedule to get out, see these bands, and write reviews. Part of the reason for this heavy weather is the NorthByNotheast festival that runs June 8 - 10 when 400 bands will descend on Toronto and play 33 clubs over 3 nights. It's going to be amazing.

So far in June, I'm planning on attending the following concerts. And none of these are officially NXNE shows.

Bend Sinister (June 6)
Radiohead (June 7)
Zappa Plays Zappa (June 16)
People In Planes / Pilate (June 29)

But there going to be just so much amazing talent here in June. During NXNE the following bands that I'm interested in will be playing in Toronto:

All Purpose Voltage Heroes (June 8 - Reverb)
C'MON (June 8 - Bovine Sex Club, June 9 - The Horseshoe)
Controller.Controller (June 9 - Mod Club Theatre)
Down with Webster (June 10 - El Macambo)
The Free Press (June 10 - Rivoli, and again June 14 - Revival)
The Illuminati (June 8 - Reverb)
Jets Overhead (June 8 - The Horseshoe)
The Mark Inside (June 9 - Rivoli)
Neverending White Lights (June 8 - Rivoli)

And that's just the list of bands I know I'm interested in... there's got to be at least double that in other bands I haven't even heard of yet that need support from the press and fans. It's going to be an amazing time. Jets Overhead is bolded because their new CD is just brilliant and I'm going to try my hardest to get out and see them.

If you're heading out in the crazy nights of NXNE and you're an aspiring writer, contact me now and let's set something up. NXNE 2006 looks like it's going to be filled with great music, and we need to share the best (and maybe the worst) experiences. Help!

On top of all that, there's even more great and/or interesting bands showing up here in June:

Dungen (June 6 - Lee's Palace)
Pink Mountaintops (June 11 - The Horseshoe)
Band of Horses (June 13 - Lee's Palace)
Broken Social Scene, Feist, Bloc Party (June 24 - Toronto Centre Island)
Snow Patrol (June 25 - Kool Haus)
Gomez (June 29 - The Guvernment)

And then comes July...

NXNE is great, I used to volunteer for the festival and every time I'd find some amazing new music. It's too bad I have to miss it this year. Careful though, certain venues (such as the Horseshoe) are likely to reach capacity so get there early! Personally, I suggest that you go see bands that you've never heard of before. You never know when you'll fal in love.

I managed to get out for Jets Overhead and got some great photos. Then later the same night, went to the Rivoli and caught the last three songs of Neverending White Lights. Next year I will either get a wristband or press pass and head out each night to see bands I've never heard (but not necessarily never heard of since a recommendation can go a long way).
