King Crimson is one of the highest regarded progressive rock bands among the fans of the genre and often cited as influence of new bands. They undoubtely released excellent albuns during their career and all their albuns from 69 to 75 are considered masterpieces. Often, Islands is cited as their worst album from this era, but it is not true, it is just not appreciated the way it should be.
First of all, Islands has nothing to do with the harder three next albums. It is more attached to the first King Crimson era. Islands has more evident classical influences and the album is certainly mellower than the others. But that is the beauty of the album. The guests in this album are all musicians of classical instruments. Tippet's piano is superb and it is really a pity that he did not become a permanent member of the band.
The songs blend jazz, blues, classical and rock influences. Formentera Lady is a great opener, with excellent piano, cello, flute and sax during the song, in different arrangements and moods. It is one of the greatest achievements of the band in terms of complexity and variety. Burrell's voice is very good and fits perfecty to the music.
Sailor's Tale is one of those jazz-avantgarde influenced songs from King Crimson. It is an excellent instrumental with superb guitar, wind instruments, percussion and mellotron. This song is at least well recognized as one excellent King Crimson song.
The Letters and Ladies of the Road are songs where Mel Collins can show all his skill in wind instruments, with superb sax solos. The songs have unusual structure and very beautiful instrumental parts.
Prelude: Song For Gulls is an unique song in the King Crimson's career. It is chamber music composed and directed by Fripp and played by orchestra musicians. The song is very beautiful, with excellent strings and oboe arrangements.
The last song, Islands, is an excellent song, with beautiful singing and playing. It has some beautiful singing in some short parts beginning and then comes a superb instrumental section, with very beautiful piano, wind instruments, mellotron and guitar, in a superb crescendo from the middle of the song till the end.
Listening to this album is a pleasurable experience and focusing on the music in it, it is clearly a masterpiece and one of the best King Crimson efforts, with excellent musicianship and exceptional beauty.
