Don't worry too much about my high artist count, At home I'll play albums from my own extensive, real library like I suppose most people do, but at work I often play last.fm radio. Following tags, artists, groups or picking other peoples radios.
For the latter I will either pick people who have low compatibility or those with a very high artist count. Therefore I will hear a lot of artists for the first time. I've found a lot of interesting music through that.
I sometimes send out seemingly more or less random friendship requests. It's just a method of trying to keep track of people who's radio I would like to tune into someday. Accept if you will, thank you if you do! But I won't be distressed if you decline or don't answer.
