It seems The Mars Volta
have become fodder for the backlash machine. Put into a rotation that the cool kids avoid like the plague, k'now, like tool. Despite of the musical talents or album qualities involved, there are certain bands that people of the hispter inclined dispostition will not listen to. This kind of makes me sad, but in a different light also encourages me to listen to my idols of years past. I'm even thinking about pirating Amputechture no matter what pitchfork thought about it.
Let's get to the reason I started listening to them the first time. I was awestruck by their guitar/vocal heroics and as a little 70's classic rock worshiping shit, I could totally dig what they were doing, man. I even saw them in concert and I think I thouroughly enjoyed them, and not their headliner, System of a Down
, who sounded pretty conformed already. And Hella
opened and it was in stadium and everyone just thought "what the fuck," because this obviously wasn't there scene.
Then I found minimalism. Fucking minimalism. I became a post-punk trendie. Still am. Fucking Wire
did it. This brought up the problem I had with the mars volta the whole time. That it was difficult music, which i am no starnger to, but it was difficult and complexified to a point that it became a fool's errand. For Example do you really need the first 2-3 minutes of 'Miranda That Ghost Just Isn't Holy Anymore?' I mean, do you even listen to that part? Would anyone besides some superfan blinded by their allegiance really miss it? I wouldn't. And here's the thing: I've found many a part that could be removed from at least 'Frances' and I haven't even looked into 'De-loused' yet. What the Mars Volta really needs is an editor. Which is actully quite ironic because what did they have with the guys from Sparta
in At the Drive-In
? Well not to belittle the two pop punks of sparta, but editors is exactly what Omar and Cedric needed and had.
So now I have a question for you: Are you angry that you read this far just to get a message board scribbling of "At the Drive-in > The Mars Volta > Sparta?" Well, don't be, I'm not done yet.
To be continued...?
