• Plans for the musical future

    17. Sep. 2006, 19:12

    In case anyone cares...

I have a lot of music, and I always love getting new stuff.

But all of that takes up a lot of space on my mp3 player... and I have a lot of music that I just haven't listened to in a while. Therefore I've decided that I am going to listen to all of my music. In a row. In the order that they are in on my mp3 player (which by the way is NOT an ipod... in case you care... I just hate the way itunes organizes music). NO REPEATS (unless I have more than one copy of a song, in which case I will listen to it as many times as i have it). This way I can possibly get back into songs/artists that I haven't listened to in a while, and I can think about deleting stuff that I really don't need.

The second part of this plan is NO NEW MUSIC! With the exceptions of the new CDs by Clay Aiken and Fergie I won't get anything new (either buying or downloading). And those shouldn't really matter because I'll probably have them by the time that I get to C and F. (It'll take me at least until Tuesday to get past A)

Unless of course any of the new Girls Aloud songs leak... then an exception will have to be made.

So my charts might look a little weird for a while. Particularly when I get to a week where I only listen to Mariah Carey (which is likely, considering the sheer volume of songs). My neighbors will also be a little skewed, but whatever. My top neighbor always has the same neighbors as I do, but never has me as a neighbor... weird...

This plan goes into effect tomorrow. I have to keep this week's charts fresh. (By the way, this week's top 10 will probably be Delta Goodrem/Jessica Simpson/Sugababes/Girls Aloud/All Saints/Lasgo/some other people... I can't think of any more right now.)
  • Musings on what I "should" and "shouldn't" like

    3. Sep. 2006, 23:12

Every person has heard "since you like artist a, you should also enjoy artist b." even has this built in with music recommendations and recommendation radio (which never seems to play good music for me, but that's another story.) This journal entry is only sort of about that... It's also sort of about demographics, and how some music is "geared towards" people of a certain age and/or image. Mostly, though, this journal is about Madonna and Hilary Duff.

I'll start with Hilary. She's not an artist I normally listen to, although I do listen to all kinds of pop music. She's always been marketed to a younger generation, and while I obviously had heard of her, I only occasionally heard her on the radio, and based on: 1) the reputation she had as a singer for younger kids (I'm in college, not 6th grade!) and 2) the fact that her songs (in my opinion) were just not very good, and she was trying to go down the "rocker chick" path that a lot of people seemed to like, I wasn't a fan, and I just ignored her, really.

This all changed while I was watching New Year's Rockin' Eve last year. There she was, singing "Beat of my Heart," and my opinion of her changed. From her outfit and her hair, not to mention the incredible euro-disco-pop song, I began to see her as a young Kylie Minogue. That is, she could become a young Kylie if she continued down this path, as opposed to the aforementioned rocker chick path. Then just recently came "Play With Fire," and Hilary took one more step down the path to Kylie-hood (I know that isn't a word, but it should be). So now there are two Hilary Duff songs that I like, and if she keeps it up, I may even end up having to buy a Hilary Duff album... wow...

After reading that, you may be thinking "that's nice and all, but you said you were going to talk about Madonna! When will you talk about Madonna???" The answer, my friends, is now. But you may not be too happy with what I have to say.

I don't like Confessions on a Dance Floor. I'm sorry, I tried, I really did. I wanted to love this album. It has everything! Madonna is a legend, and she was going the euro-disco-pop route that I like so much (see above). She even sampled my second favorite ABBA song for "Hung Up." (SOS is my favorite ABBA song) So, as you can see, this album should be the soundtrack to my life, my favorite album of all time, constantly on replay, etc. Why isn't it??? I've listened to it, then listened to it several more times to see if it would grow on me, really hoping that it would. But it didn't. So I should love it, and I don't know why I don't. If anyone has any insight as to why this is, please tell me! Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy?!?!?!

So yes, that is my story of liking music I shouldn't like, and not liking music that I should. And if anyone can help me with my Madonna problem, it would be much appreciated.

Guess what? I'm scrobbling again! yay! I'm back at school, and my computer is again my main source for music.

Expect the following artists to jump on my charts:
Christina Aguilera, since her new album is excellent *and* really long
Christina Milian, since I finally bought So Amazin'. The reason I waited so long is that I thought it was going to be too hip-hop for my tastes, but it isn't! (yay!) So now I have to make up for the months of not listening to it.
Rachel Stevens, since I finally got myself a legitimate copy of Funky Dory.

Anyway... it's good to be back.

    12. Aug. 2006, 22:02

As everyone and their mother knows by now, the new Christina Aguilera album is a throwback to the music of the 1920's, 30's, and 40's. However, it takes me back to another time: 2002. It's not just Christina, either. The radio is beginning to feel like it did 3-5 years ago.... Maybe I'll even start listening to it again.

We're getting comebacks from several of the artists who were huge then (and still now... at least hopefully).

There's Christina, whose album Stripped came out in 2002, and is now coming back with a double album, which is strange, since Stripped is 20 tracks long, and Back to Basics is only 2 tracks longer. I haven't heard much yet, since I'm waiting for the album to come into stores, but Ain't No Other Man blows me away!

Justified also came out around the same time as Stripped, and lo and behold! Justin Timberlake is also coming back. I'm actually not a big fan of JT, but I used to be. I liked quite a few of the songs on Justified, but my least favorite, which is an understatement because I absolutely hated it, was Rock Your Body, which inevitably became his biggest hit, and that is what changed my opinion of him from being not bad to being terrible. Now he's bringing sexy back, which seems impossible, since you would think that being sexy would be a prerequisite for that. Oh well, we'll see if he comes out with something better next time...

It's been 3 years since we've seen a new album from Jessica Simpson, and after the low point that was These Boots Are Made for Walkin', it seems as if Jessica is starting to SING again. I'm expecting A Public Affair to be at about the level of Irresistible based on the single A Public Affair when it comes to singing, then I'm hoping she'll continue in the right direction, and when she releases her 5th album the singing will be up to the level of her first album.

Speaking of singing ability... The wonderful, amazing, talented Clay Aiken is also coming back. It was 2003 when he was robbed of the American Idol title, and had one of the biggest selling singles ever with This Is The Night. Then came Invisible from the amazing album Measure of a Man. On September 19th, we finally get to hear the voice again. Last's year's The Emancipation of Mimi was the return of the female voice, A Thousand Different Ways is the return of the male voice... how awesome would a duet between those two be?

There are also upcoming albums by Stacie Orrico and Beyonce, and through my reading of random music blogs, I have heard some new songs by 3LW, who I used to be obsessed with back in the day, and also Mya and Monica. Stacie and Mya I would buy without question, the others I probably want to hear a little more from before I decide. Mya and Monica are some of who I consider the to be the more prevalant female R&B singers (along with Brandy and Aaliyah), so it's strange to me nowadays when I meet people who haven't heard of them, it makes me feel old. Kids today don't get chicken pox either, those little whippersnappers...

Anyway... there are some new artists around now too, but they're not completely out of place in my flashback to 2001-2003. Paris Hilton can fill the shoes of Ashanti as the adequate singer who does catchy songs (yeah, a little bit different style, but whatever... add Cassie in there and together they can do Ashanti). I see Fergie coming in as the next Jennifer Lopez, a pop singer with some hip hop thrown in, and a lot of dancing, and Chris Brown has officially taken the position of artist-who-isn't-really-that-bad-but-seriously-irritates-me-and-forces-me-to-change-stations-when-he-comes-on-the-radio away from Usher.

Now comes the obvious question of who comes next?
It was 2003 when Sugababes had the number one dance hit here with Hole in the Head, so another attempt to make it over here would fit right in. I would also love to see (errr... hear)Britney Spears team up with uber-producer Xenomania and take over the world... again.
  • Mine is bigger

    17. Jul. 2006, 8:47

Everyone is doing it... even I did it once before... but this time is different! This lyrics game won't last just a few days like the normal ones do, it will last forever!!!!! (Or maybe a week or so)

I followed all these normal rules:

Step 1: Put your MP3 player or whatever on random.
Step 2: Post the first line from the first 100 songs that play, no matter how embarrassing.
Step 3: Bold out the songs when someone guesses both artist and track correctly.
Step 4: Looking them up on Google or any other search engine is CHEATING!

And I also added these rule clarifications:
    1. I will skip any song that is not in English, instrumental (obviously), a live American Idol track (otherwise the multiple artists is confusing - exception: their original songs), Christmas/Holiday themed, or not actually a song (i.e. interludes, etc)
    2. If a song has an intro of any kind, I will skip it and use the actual first line
    3. If the first line is the title, I will write "[title]" and then the second line

And some of these might be a little obscure, but you'll just have to deal with that.

[edit Oct. 2nd,2006: I separated the solved ones from the unsolved, to make this thing easier to read]

  • An apology and a top 20

    22. Jun. 2006, 1:03

First of all, if anyone's checked, you may have noticed that it has been about a month since I last litened to anything on No, it's not a case of being slow to update. I turned it off. Why? Well, I'm at home for the summer, so I am using this strange technology called a cd player, along with these crazy round metal objects called cds. So, yes, I will occasionally listen to some music on my computer, but it's not going to be a valid representaion of what I'm actually listening to. So now I must apologize for my empty charts.

But FEAR NOT!! This is only temporary, and I will be back in full force near the end of August (I think around the 20th), and in the meantime I will still be around to read and write journal entries, and various other fun things.

And now, to make up for my absence for the past month, here is my latest overall top 20 artist list, along some general commentary.

    1 Sugababes
Red Dress is currently my most played song, but this is a little unfair, since I have 3 different versions of it - one with Mutya Buena, one with Amelle Berrabah, and the extended version.

    2 Girls Aloud
Ah, I wish I was British. My music would be so much more appreciated there. (See also: a lot of the rest of this list)

    3 Natasha Bedingfield
I heard a rumor that she and Daniel Bedingfield hava a sister who is also musical. I'll have to look out for that.

    4 Mariah Carey
Butterfly was one of the first cds I ever bought. (I think I got it at the same time as I got Backstreet Boys) I obviously had good taste, even back then.

    5 The Veronicas
I don't really know anything about them except that I like their music - but I guess that's all I need to know.

    5 The Pussycat Dolls
Yes, I admit it, I listen to PCD a lot. I could never go see them live though, because I would definitely not fit in with their target demographic. (Female Cornell student and future statistician vs. teenage boys who think they're hot)

    7 Savage Garden
When I was about 12 years old (circa 1997) I wanted to buy a Savage Garden CD, but my mom was worried because the name sounds a little "savage." Then she heard Truly Madly Deeply, and obviously had nothing to worry about. But it is really funny that of all the things to worry about, she worried about Savage Garden.

    8 Pink
When I'm Not Dead was coming out, everyone kept saying how it more like Missundaztood than Try This, and therefore better than Try This. As Try This is my favorite P!nk album (notice my tricky way of linking to both versions of her name), and Missundaztood is my least favorite, I was a little skeptical. I ended up liking about half of it, which puts it in 3rd place amongst her albums.

    8 Kylie Minogue
So many young singers seem to be getting cancer lately. There's Kylie, Anastacia, Delta Goodrem, Sheryl Crow, and probably more that I can't think of right now. Luckily they are all still doing well.

    10 Atomic Kitten
I first heard them on the Bring It On soundtrack, with the song See Ya, but I didn't think much about them until Atomic Kitten came out, and that's when I started to get into the other British girl groups (see above).

    11 Shakira
"Told you I felt lucky with my humble breasts, Well I don't" -Costume Makes the Clown
"Lucky that my breasts are small and humble, So you don't confuse them with mountains" -Whenever, Wherever
I love it when artists reference their old songs - it's like being involved in a private joke.

    11 Delta Goodrem
    see #8

    13 Darren Hayes
Darren's music is oh so very underrated by the general public.

    14 Clay Aiken
On my 18th birthday (Jan 28, 2003), Clay first appeared on American Idol. That was the day I decided he should win. :)

    15 Aslyn
Another artist I don't know anything about...

    16 Soda Club
I usually can't listen to a full album of dance music, but Anthem Alert is just that good. Normally I need a ballad or two. I suppose it does have the lovely No One Knows.

    17 Natalise
I don't know anything about her either. reccomended her to me.

    18 Gwen Stefani
In a classic case of me loving all an artist's songs except the ones on the radio, Hollaback Girl is quite possibly the most horrible song. EVER.

    19 Seal
Best 1991-2004 has so many classics on it. I would say it takes me back, but I really didn't appreciate the awesomeness of Seal back then.

    20 Dannii Minogue
Since it's not on my main page, I'll let you know that I'm currently listening to some of Dannii's greatest hits. By the way, on my Neon Nights CD it spells her name "Danni" (just the disc, not the packaging). Maybe this means it will be extra valuable someday...

That's the end! Leave comments and I promise I'll comment on those too.
  • An odd coincidence

    18. Mai. 2006, 6:33

So... somehow in the span of today, Sugababes overtook Girls Aloud as my top overall artist, but What Will The Neighbours Say overtook Taller In More Ways as my top album...

    Intersting, eh?

[Note: this really isn't THAT interesting, I just noticed it and felt like sharing this information]

  • Top 10 May 23-29 (or, I am all pop, not at all emo)

    4. Mai. 2006, 23:37

I needed to do something with last week's top 10 list, and I thought this would be interesting:

FIRST: My emo rating (I stold this from some random person)
    1. Take your top ten artists and get their 'emo rating' If you look on the artist page and then click "Tags" you can see how many times they've been tagged "Emo"

    1 Sugababes 3
    2 Girls Aloud 3
    3 Kaci Brown 0
    4 Savage Garden 6
    5 Darren Hayes 3
    6 Mariah Carey 3
    7 Seal 4
    8 Emma Bunton 0
    9 The Pussycat Dolls 3
    10 Kylie Minogue 3

    2. Add them all together and divide by 10 to get the average

    3. Then divide that by the average of the top ten emo artists, which is: 847

In case you're interested, the 10 most emo artists on here are:
    1 Taking Back Sunday 1091
    2 My Chemical Romance 1026
    3 Fall Out Boy 989
    4 Dashboard Confessional 891
5 Death Cab for Cutie 853
    6 Jimmy Eat World 829
    7 Brand New 738
    8 Bright Eyes 711
    9 The Used 688
    10 Funeral for a Friend 654

    4. Multiply your result by 100 to get a percentage

    .33%! hahahahaha

Since I knew that wasn't going to show much, I am now going to adapt the test to show how POP I am (this one should be insanely high, but at least it will make sense - seriously, who tags the Pussycat Dolls as emo???)

    1. Take your top ten artists and get their 'pop rating' If you look on the artist page and then click "Tags" you can see how many times they've been tagged "Pop"

    1 Sugababes 265
    2 Girls Aloud 140
    3 Kaci Brown 8
    4 Savage Garden 231
    5 Darren Hayes 69
    6 Mariah Carey 256
    7 Seal 113
    8 Emma Bunton 47
    9 The Pussycat Dolls 91
    10 Kylie Minogue 428

    2. Add them all together and divide by 10 to get the average

    3. Then divide that by the average of the top ten pop artists, which is: 579

In case you're interested, the 10 most pop artists on here are:
    1 Madonna 938
    2 The Beatles 890
    3 U2 554
    4 Kelly Clarkson 551
    5 Coldplay 520
    6 Gwen Stefani 514
    7 Britney Spears 488
    8 Michael Jackson 466
    9 Dido 441
    10 Robbie Williams 428
10 Kylie Minogue 428 [tie, but I only added 428 once]

    4. Multiply your result by 100 to get a percentage

Hmmm... it's not as high as I thought it would be, but I've decided I don't like this method of calculating it - the average should be weighted, to account for artists without very many tags. For example, Kaci Brown only has 50 tags, so 8 pop tags is actually a lot. I'll just say that all of my top 10 have "pop" at the top of the tag list, and people need to be more stringent about giving out "emo" tags - seriously...

Step 2: Post the first line from the first 30 songs that play, not matter how embarassing.
