Started the year with catching up on some of the albums iv'e totally missed over the last years, with no respect. The unique psychedelic woodcuter americana of Midlake - The Trials Of Van Occupanther is probably one of the decade's strongest records, too bad what iv'e heard of their 2010 follow-up seems a bit dull in comparison. The other album iv'e totally ignored in 2008 is my fellow Swede: The Tallest Man on Earth - Shallow Grave An impressive Dylanish one-man-restortion singer/songwriter that in swedish comparison stands out by faar.

In a way I have reinvented myself this year in terms of, partly abandoning the mellow americana or catchy indie i adored during 2008. Though the V/A album Dark Was The Night is the collar that gilds my last years suit. I've also rediscovered the Hardcore and alternative metal scene, with sound-surprising new discovers. It gets to me that in such a retrograde genre there are changes and I think that change has just started. Most obvious heard in Converge, this generations Black Flag? Hoping for a huge jump out of the new-metal plague into an avantagardish era for alternative rock/metal, maybe sprung out of the sludge factories of Baroness hometown Savannah.

The second thing that strikes me entering the new decade is the closure theme of some of the lyrical highlights of the year. Bill Callahan's (ex. (Smog)) settlement with the ongoing clash of Emotion vs. rationality, Unity vs. Individuality, Horses vs. Eagles. David Bazan's (ex. Pedro the Lion) final secession with religion and Vic Chesnutt's sad closure with death on christmas day. Listen to his masterpiece Flirted With You All My Life.

It is also a bit surprising that Nirvana 17 years after their hayday's finally have released and restored the legendary Live at Reading performance, in one way it also fits as closure to a decade that did not really take a turn, comparing it to the 90's genre by genre MTV attention seekers. Hopefully the 2010's will not be retro 80's all over again. It is time for the early 90's to have its rough intervention with the neo kitch of the 2000's].

For some reason i do think that 2009 was a faar better year than 2008, but it is hard to pick any stand-out releases or sensational albums. Though it is easy to tell that the consolidation of an already promising progress does seem to continue into the new decade. The offspring of the torrent/spotify generation has finally grown from the soil....

You're right, The Tallest Man On Earth is more Dylan than Dylan himself! New to me are Andrew Jackson Jihad, Converge, David Bazan, Kylesa, Reigning Sound, Baroness and Future of the Left. That's the point of being friend with someone. But if you have different friendship policy, just tell me and I'll remove my friendship request.
