Oklahoma State Rock Song

Late yesterday the Oklahoma legislature announced the winner of the "Oklahoma State Rock Song" competition. A number of songs were nominated, and anyone could vote. Well, the song that was chosen is "Do You Realize??" by The Flaming Lips, a band from Oklahoma City. The song is musically reminiscent of John Lennon's "Imagine"... except without the hopefulness. It doesn't really have a thing to do with Oklahoma... it doesn't sound like the great rock & roll music that has historically come from the state (check out the other finalists... Leon Russell hel-LOOOO!!), and frankly, the lyrics don't mean anything. I may well get flamed by rabid Flaming Lips fans for saying this, particularly the ones who live in OK City and voted this song in, but this is a REALLY DUMB choice for our state rock song...

I have to disagree. "Do You Realize?" is a very positive song! It's telling us to let people know we love them now, not waiting until they're gone to regret remaining silent. And realizing that the "sun doesn't go down" should reinforce the hope of everlasting life. I think that's a great representation of a state that keeps on going, working hard to "make the good things last." Kudos to the choice of The Flaming Lips, a group for today and the future, as singers of the Oklahoma State Rock Song!
