Favorite Albums – Autumn 2011

So this time around, I decided to make the list based on my charts here on LastFM, since I’ve been able to scrobble a lot more tracks on the go thanks to a new gadget... so here it is! My top albums of the last three months!

[1] [Steven WilsonGrace for Drowning] I was lucky enough to have caught Wilson on tour for this album and I’ve listened to this album more than all the other albums on this list taken together... That’s all that needs to be said.

[2] [OpethHeritage] Heritage is the 10th studio album from Opeth and it’s a total change in style, compared to their previous album Watershed. The subtleties present on this album are what kept me coming back over and over. Lots of jazz and old prog rock influence all over here. Seeing them live was also an amazing experience!

[3] [PusciferConditions of My Parole] Second studio outing from TOOL’s Maynard James Keenan proves to be a lot more cohesive this time around, probably because it was recorded in a lot less time. Slightly more serious than the previous album... and overall, a great voyage to go on. Great album... and easily one of the best albums out this year.

[4] [Steven WilsonInsurgentes] Didn’t I say I’m always listening to this in the previous list I did?

[5] [Cliff MartinezDrive (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)] So I went to see Drive when it was still in theaters and it blew my mind... great film from Nicolas Winding Refn. Must-see for everyone... and this was also my introduction to Cliff Martinez, who put together one of the best ambient scores I’ve ever come across.

[6] [Skinny PuppyhanDover] New and 11th studio album from Skinny Puppy... Dark, moody, electronic-industrial voyage from one of the oldest bands in that scene. It took me a few listens to warm up to, but I think this is a lot better than their previous album Mythmaker, which I happen to like quite a lot as well.

[7] [PrimusGreen Naugahyde] If you like the first couple of Primus albums, you owe it to yourself to hear Green Naugahyde... it harkens back to that older Primus style while still sounding fresh. Exciting listen all the way through.

[8] [CoilBlack Antlers] I was familiar with The Ape of Naples for quite a long time, but I’ve never listened to this album until just a few weeks ago. The ambience and the dark elements present here are unmatched by any other band out there. This is an amazing listen that will change your perception of dark ambient music forever.

[Anathema – We're Here Because We're Here]
[Mastodon – The Hunter]
[Porcupine Tree – Up the Downstair]
[Hella – Tripper]
[Ария – Феникс]
[Russian Circles – Empros]
[B. Dolan – House of Bees Vol. 1]

Most disliked album this time around?
[BushThe Sea of Memories] I used to like a few songs by Bush quite a lot back in high school, when I was in my 90’s alternative phase. I suppose I still like a few tracks here and there, which is why I decided to give their new album a try. After barely making it all the way through the whole album, I concluded that it was extremely bland. Some songs had interesting intro pieces, but once the actual track would begin, it would sound just like the previous track. It sounded totally uninspired, musically flat and worst of all - void of real emotion I could find myself relating to. Very disappointing.

Nice list. I need to check out Russian Circles's new album...by the way, not sure if you ever listened to Animals as Leaders (if not grab both albums), but they just released a new album last month, Weightless, and it's dope. It has a similar vibe to the stuff you've been listening to lately.

Side note - I saw Animals as Leaders play about a week ago. Holy shit, they ooze talent. 8 string guitar. Speed. Accuracy. Crazy.

Side note - Grace for Drowning is probably my album of the year. Such a solid release! My friends and I have been tearing it apart.

I'll have to check Animals as Leaders out! As far as GFD being album of the year, I would have to agree on that as well! Hopefully he'll come back somewhere near here with the second leg of his tour. I'd love to go see him again... and he's promising a BR/DVD this time around!!
