Thank you. Some surprisingly good tunes in those links, I'll investigate further...I only picked up about one lyric in four though... Did you get your Joanna tickets?... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlC0nQ2wEp8

I'm probably a bad person to ask about current Irish music as, to my shame, I don't follow the local scene terribly closely. I'd hazard a guess that you'd really like Fionn Regan's album The End of History http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgJMoySCfL8&feature=related Cathy Davey also has a very solid album from a few years back,Tales Of Silversleeve http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mMmajNPQQeU The Frames were hugely popular here for a while, and while Glen Hansard (guy from the film Once) comes across a bit too precious for my liking, they do have some good songs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=madYJK78XL0

Wow, you portray Germany as a cultural wasteland. I'm sure everyone thinks of their own country in those terms though (see your examples! You forgot Westlife, and these guys are huge here now: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTkyWeoSEM8 ...SIGH...). Irish TV is identical to German TV by the sound of things. I was ignorant of the fact The Field is/are signed to a German label (Kompakt)until you mentioned it.A friend of mine loves him. Can you recommend any particular albums from the Hamburger Schule guys you mentioned? Steppenwolf is one of those books I keep meaning to read, and I defo will now.

Ha! Thanks for the encouragement. MP3 has made me so lazy. My record player has a nice thick layer of dust on it, and the CDs only get freed from shrinkwrap for uploading purposes. Do you have any German pop culture gems to share with me? I'm afraid my only points of reference are Gunter Grass, Der Untergang, Das Boot and Good Bye Lenin...

Hey. I also forgot Brass Eye, The Day Today and Alan Partridge(Knowing Me, Knowing You and I'm AP), and The Thick of It (Political sitcom with the brilliant Peter Capaldi: not sure how well the references will travel though). Pretty much anything with the names Chris Morris or Armando Ianucci attached has a 99% chance of being good. Also, you're getting close to 40k listens: verrry impressive...

Hmmm, I don't think you fully realise the mess Ireland is in at the minute... You're going to regret asking me about TV shows...the bombardment starts here! -Garth Marenghi's Darkplace: Seriously "meta-" comedy. Truly original. -Look Around You: Spoof of '80's British educational shows by Peter Serafinowicz and Robert Popper. Surreal, simple, brilliant. All free on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2eVN55NEREo -Spaced: Superbly written/directed show involving most of the guys from Hot Fuzz/Shaun Of The Dead. Also free on YouTube. -QI; Panel show hosted by Stephen Fry. Accepted wisdom and fallacies punished. All the earlier ep's are on YouTube. You may like this one! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpLnLuCbNSE I'm sure you're familiar with 30 Rock also. Sorry if you know all or some of these already. I'll try to think of more.

There's a grain of truth to most stereotypes **drinks deeply from pint of Guinness before eating a mouthful of potatoes, expresses anti-British sentiment, beats wife, doffs cap to paedophile priest, writes a poem, pens new Eurovision winner, accepts EU grant before complaining about unwanted European influence in Ireland...** I think you're being harsh on Germans though. Most I've met have been sincere and self-aware. Likewise, you're being kind to Ireland comedically. Most Irish comedy actors/writers only reach their peak when they reach the less stagnant evironment of the UK. Father Ted was first shown on British Channel 4. (Speaking of which, check out Graham Linehan's blog: http://whythatsdelightful.wordpress.com/ ). While the drunk asshole thing does happen at festivals (as it does at gigs), you're just as likely to be squashed up against other huge fans of the band in question. You do get smelly though...

Fortunately I didn't miss anyone I really wanted to see. The medical staff were so nice too. So it's not just a stereotype that metal is huge in Germany then? Is Pukkelpop anywhere near you? I try to do a festival or 2 every year. Electric Picnic is a good one over here and the campsites are tolerable. Oxegen is the biggest one but it attracts a younger, more boorish crowd. Primavera was brilliant, but I had the misfortune of going to Benicassim later last year. Very poor festival. Uninspiring lineup, horrific heat (for a pasty Irishman anyway!), sandstorm blew tent away, fire, odd crowd...I won't be going back. Did you get your tickets? I'd love to see her, but she doesn't seem to be stopping over here. We can't really escape harps over here (back of the Euro!).

My excitement levels re Primavera have been building steadily. Each new batch of bands announced has brought someone else I really want to see. If I can just arrive home unscathed this year I'll be happy. I, ahem, overindulged a little last year and ended up leaving a large chunk of my shin on a step. Spent the end of the last night getting stitched up. Manners will be had this year...well that's the plan anyway. Do you do festivals yourself? I see you're going to Owen Pallett 3 days before me: don't tire him out now, he has 2 shows to do here, and it'll be rowdy (just after St.Patrick's Day)...

Hey, thanks for the review. Oooh, I'm actually jealous even though I will be seeing them soonish. Lucky you, getting to meet them too. I feel bad not replying to you in German, cos your English is better than mine! Ich habe nicht seit 10 Jahren Deutsch gesprochen. Ich habe noch alles vergessen(?)...so I'll stick to English before I shame myself any further...

I'm sure they'll return for you. Ah I love the snow though...it's a novelty over here. Reminds me of being a kid. Do you live far from Koln (sorry, dunno how to make an umlaut!)? I've never seen Spoon before, so let me know how they are. They're playing PrimaveraSound(Barca) in May and I can't wait. Their albums are sooo consistently good. Dublin is great for gigs alright. Most acts drop in on the way to the UK, and it's a relatively small city, so getting to shows is no hassle. I have friends in London, and while they get EVERYONE, travelling to gigs can be a nightmare cos the city's so spread out.
