  • Crimson Milk's Top Metal Albums of 2010

    28. Dez. 2010, 19:40

After the bountiful harvest of 2009, 2010 looked to bring drought and famine, but a little research (and a few great recommendations) proved the weather was just fine – dark and stormy with skin piercing snow and hail. Black Metal reigned in fearsome terror this era (year), with experimental band Deathspell Omega donning the ancient Ravencrown. Also supporting the movement are dark metallers Agalloch and October Falls, the now-progressive veteran Ihsahn, ambitious and exciting newcomers Aldaaron, and more traditional acts 1349 and Watain (who also deserve best live-act – sorry, “ritual” – of the year).

Death metal was equally well-represented, though the offerings were widely disappointing. Stemming the tide were Immolation, whose brand of brutal death is still fresh and purely destructive, and Hour of Penance, the poor man’s Behemoth which seemingly has no qualms standing in for the latter band in its absence.

Beating out Triptykon for best surprise of the year is Darkthrone. I don’t know who tied up this black metal band and started playing punkish speed metal under their names, but it’s fine with me.

    The list:

    1.Deathspell OmegaParacletus
    2.AgallochMarrow of the Spirit
    3.IhsahnAfter
    4.AldaaronNous Reviendrons Immortels

    Disappointments

Despite the successes, there were still some serious let downs. Many of which were merely the expected results of waning acts, while others were marred with too many unpleasant stylistic decisions. Several were simply the victims of hype. Dimmu Borgir and Finntroll have sadly become bad imitations of themselves. In the former’s case, it’s evident what writing took place prior to half the band’s departure. Finntroll on the other hand, is just a pale shadow of its past embodiment.

With regard to hype, Melechesh suffered from frequent inaccurate and unfair labeling as black and or death metal, though the actual product is still not to my taste. Hail of Bullets showed some promise, but only managed to mesh with their concept on the final track of the album (and the vocals are terrible).

The biggest disappointment was easily Nevermore’s The Obsidian Conspiracy. Loomis is in top form as usual, but his soloing seems cut short in every song. While always a treat to hear the guy shred, it is unfortunately the only worthy aspect of the album. Truly, Dane has cleaned up his voice and delivers an all-around improved sound, but tragically his lyrical content nullifies almost all enjoyment offered by the album. Look it up yourself. Maybe it won’t seem as abysmal, just somewhat lame. Now listen to it and hear how he articulates the phrases. Dear Satan, can we petition to put Loomis with a real band??

While not as personally disappointing as The Obsidian Conspiracy, deathcore band After the Burial’s In Dreams shattered not only my limited faith in that band but also every genre ending in –core and not beginning with grind-. These guys were practically my champions of metal-/deathcore. Their 2008 album Rareform actually lived up to its title. The songs were catchy and jerky like the style aspires to be, the musicians demonstrated some actual talent, and it mostly left out the immature, emo shit that makes the genre unlistenable to me. Forget all that with In Dreams. It’s just another shit album made for girls and dudes who spend more money on their haircuts and makeup than girls.

    Finally, subcategory top picks:

    Best EP: AbortedCoronary Reconstruction
    Best live album: MeshuggahAlive
Best Video: Behemoth – "Alas, the Lord Is Upon Me"
    Best Album Art: MeshuggahAlive
