  • Molly Nilsson, DOKkantine, zondag 25 maart 2012

    28. Mär. 2012, 14:35

Sun 25 Mar – Subbacultcha! presents: Molly Nilsson

Het bevestigt alleszins haar “do it yourself” attitude.
Zo begon ze haar karaoke set met het ingetogen maar aanstekelijke ‘A Song They Won’t Be Playing on the Radio’ (uit haar derde album ‘Follow the Light’ uit 2010).
Onder meer ‘Hiroshima Street’, ‘City of Atlantis’, ‘You Always Hurt the One You Love’ en mijn persoonlijke favoriet ‘I Hope You Die’.

    rock/pop:
1! Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion [Domino] (Amazing how they keep getting better!)

    2. Nadja - When I See the Sun Always Shines on TV [The End Records] (good, original "shoegaze" versions of tracks from Elliott Smith, A-ha, etc.)
    3. The xx - XX [Young Turks] (I like the soberness of the sound, especially in these times of loudness)
    4. Yo La Tengo - Popular Songs [Matador]

    6. Tortoise - Beacons Of Ancestry [Thrill Jockey]
    7. Health - Get Color [Lovepump United]

    4. Giuseppe Ielasi - Aix [12k] (Clear, "open" sound; samples "found sounds")
    5. William Basinski - 92982 [2062] (muffled, crackling loops -as usual- but still intruiging)
    6. Alva Noto - Xerrox Vol.2 [Raster Noton] (I like it better than the first volume; three volumes will follow!)

    °°°
    Movies/documentaries I liked a lot:
    Das Weiße Band (Michael Haneke)
    Inglourious Basterds (Quentin Tarantino)
    A Serious Man (Coen brothers)
    The Cove (Louie Psihoyos)
(I have yet to see Up, Moon, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Avatar, El General... but overall, I think it was quite a bad year for cinema...)

    °°°
    Conclusion:
It seems that I'm losing touch with contemporary pop/rock music. Many things get hyped. When I finally check them out, they often disappoint me. The few exceptions were The XX and Phoenix. (With the -now überfamous- Animal Collective I was already familiar for some time.)
The main constatation is that I'm going further and further into experimental music. It's a direction I went into since a couple of years, but now more radical... I'm especially fond of ambient :-)
Lastly, it's clear that I'm losing my taste for (minimal) techno...

  • Byrne baby Byrne! (dinsdag 10 maart '09 - Elizabethzaal)

    11. Mär. 2009, 16:23

Tue 10 Mar – David Byrne

O.a. 'Once In A Lifetime', 'Burning Down The House', 'Take Me To The River' en 'Houses In Motion' werden erg enthousiast onthaald.
    Once in a lifetime? inderdaad!

    °°°

Favourite movies: (I didn't see a lot of 'new' movies this year)
!!! Burn After Reading was so funny, I went to see it three times! Malkovich rules. I love his mannerisms, the way he speaks. And it's nice Clooney, Pitt and McDormand wanted to play characters that are obviously "part of a league of morons" :p

    - 'Tropic Thunder' had some funny bits, but overall it was not good...
    - 'Wall-e' started off interesting, but then it became weaker, over the top... Visually overwhelming though...
    - 'Quantum Of Solace' was veeeeeery weak. I expected it, but I was forced by friends to see it...
    - 'Milk'. I'm soon going to see it. I've read it's a good movie.
    - 'What Just Happened'. I have yet to see this one. It's directed by Barry Levinson and it features De Niro, John Turturro etc. I'm curious, because De Niro's and Levinson's previous collaboration 'Wag The Dog' is one of my favourite comedies (satires). It's getting positive reviews...
    - 'Zack and Miri Make a Porno', Kevin Smith's (controversial?) comedy. Another one I have yet to see.
    - 'Entre Les Murs'. Add also to the 'to watch' list
    - 'The Dark Knight'. Well, by now I must be the only one who hasn' t seen this movie. I dislike comic books and surely the films based on them, that's the reason. ('Sin City' is an exception though).

    °°°

I hope you like the colour associations :p
Maybe I'll add some comments/arguments to the mentioned albums and tracks, but now I'm too busy...
And it's possible the order of items changes... for example, because I found a great album I didn't previously hear (in 2008). And it's worthy to put in the list...

If you have some music/film recommendations for me, regarding my lists. Feel free to comment ;)
(and no, I really did check out Fleet Foxes, and it wasn't my type of music) :D

    Greetings,

    Matthias.

EDIT: changed some lists and added the techno list. Plus I recently saw 'Burn After Reading' for the third time :p
  • My favourite electronic music albums of this decennium (until now)

    3. Dez. 2008, 19:19

My favourite electronic music albums of this decennium (until now of course):
    ordered alphabeticly
no (split) singles, only albums and EP's

there will be more albums added in the future! (And also descriptions)

I focus on the electronic aspect: So the mentioned music is not vocal-based or guitar-based etc. Unless filtered/processed :)
I want to remind that this is not a list of what I think are "the best" albums, but a list of albums/EP's that I simply personally like the most.
I don't give ratings higher than 9. Perfection doesn't exist, even in nature.
Btw, excuse me for my weird taste in music :)

    Autechre - Confield [Warp] (2001)
Abstract, IDM, Experimental, sounds that aliens would make
Because of it's very sterile, cold, impersonal technical sound, most Autechre fans call this the most difficult Ae release, and they certainly don't recommend it as an Ae album to start with. Well it was all the opposite for me: this was actually the first Autechre album I ever heard (I think I was 16) and I was directly intrigued by it. But, I admit it's certainly not a record to play at any time...

Stars Of The Lid - And Their Refinement Of The Decline [Kranky] (2007)
    Modern Classical, Ambient, Drone
It's a bit less original than it's predecessor (seems sometimes like a Tired Sounds Part 2), but it still sounds good.

The Black Dog - Radio Scarecrow [Soma Quality] (2008)
    IDM, Techno, Ambient
A nice surprise from these godfathers of IDM. An accessible mix of IDM, techno and some ambient echoes. A bit of a long trip (more than 70 min), so take your time :)

The Field - From Here We Go Sublime [Kompakt] (2007)
    Trance, Techno, Minimal
On his debut, the Scandinavian fellow did a refreshing take on techno. Although the minimalistic approach, repeating "trancey" loops, can get a bit ehm boring.

Asmus Tietchens & Richard Chartier - Fabrication [Die Stadt] (2007)
    Abstract, Minimal, Experimental
I especially love the first quarter, with it's fade-in-fade-out noise and the subtle effects. You have to listen to it in the dark and with high volume.
    Stand-out: there's only one track (±50 min)

Keith Fullerton Whitman - Playthroughs [Kranky] (2002)
    Drone, Minimal, Ambient
Slow evolving compositions, played on a guitar but processed through several filters so it sounds like no guitar at all :)

    Ratings: d 4,5 ; P 9,7 ; a 4,5
    & 9/10 *
