Booker T. And The M.G.'s – Green Onions
This music has “60s!” written all over it. It sounds really dated, but no wonder: the sixties are already a long time ago. Sometimes you see in tv shows these house parties where everyone dances the same way (from one side to another… and back, whilst swinging their arms), and the music always sounds so cheesy. Well, it could be this music.
Booker T. And The M.G.’s bring soul music, but not the kind Ray Charles sings. The most important difference is the introduction of (again) the Hammond organ. Although probably very original then, you don’t hear those organs anymore nowadays. (Thank God). It’s the organ that makes the music sound so dated: the songs where there is a bigger role for the guitar and the drums are definitely the better ones (Green Onions, Mo' Onions, Behave Yourself, Comin' Home Baby). The more organ-centered songs actually sound like music that has been transformed to the kind of MIDI-music you can hear in the supermarket. Not fair: Booker T. And The M.G.’s were first!
This said, it seems like a bad album. Well, it is definitely not. Even though it is extremely dated, it still is a lot of fun. Green Onions is rightly the most well-known song and you can’t but do a funny dance to Rinky-Dink.
So, not only an album with a very high fun value, but also a must if you want to throw a sixties party!
