Any thoughts on a new Godflesh album?

Ordered ;) BTW, received A World Lit Only by Fire CD and hoodie just yesterday. I didn't expect there would be a GODFLESH logo on one arm (just like it was with the long sleeve t-shirt). It was a pleasant surprise :)

Holy shit, man, I see the news about your Streetcleaner tribute are posted in JKB's blog! Who knows, maybe some day you'll work side by side with the man himself!

But I'm going to buy some of your stuff even in digital when I'll have enough "excess" money. I checked out that excerpt of your cover/rework of Godflesh’s Pulp earlier, as well as “Half Life” from that Swans tribute, massive things. Really want to hear the full version of Pulp. BTW, I didn’t even notice that Streetcleaner is getting so old, damn, it still sounds fresh… Also, I still have the Kontrol Deprivator album (which I was listening to a long time ago) on one of my old hard drives. Talking about artworks, the Proto-substance's one is really awesome.

Sad news about Wayne, Static-X was one of the best nu metal representatives. As for nu metal in general, I like its initial idea to be something opposite to conservative, obsolete and decaying "proper" metal sound. But yeah, its general sound became too "clean" rather quickly, and it's a sort of shortcoming when it comes to aggressive guitar-driven music. Damn, I really want to "support" you and Bernardo (Oyasumi) financially, but I'm not used to buying any stuff in digital formats (like many other people, I think) since keeping it just on a hard drive isn't secure, for sure. I’m a miser, yes ;D The fact that people don't want to deal with buying music digitally has to be a real problem for all the beginning musicians who transmit their works only digitally.

I've also checked your fresh EP called Syndicate, it's fucking good. I'm sure I'm not the first who asks you that, but have you got any plans for a physical release on your label? I'm obsessed with collecting CDs, especially the rare and underground ones… And sorry for flooding your shoutbox, lol.

Heh, I think people mention Meshuggah all the time because they're known as one of the first bands who used 8-strings on a regular basis. I also remember one 2013 video interview (I'm sure you've seen it) with JKB and Ben where JKB had stated that he "really likes Meshuggah" and that "the first Korn album has got some nice moments, but the band is pretty awful generally". This makes some sense, I think. Who knows, maybe they decided to use 8-string because of Meshuggah, haha. And I have the same opinion on these two bands as him. But I'm becoming more tolerant to some of nu metal these days. I even liked some songs from the first Slipknot album, lol. I remember JKB blamed this genre in that interview where he talked about his hate towards Us and Them.

Same here man! Us and Them was my first Godflesh experience, I discovered it sometime in 2009. It's an immense masterpiece and one of the best albums I know. It not only has increased my growing interest in Justin's stuff but also showed me how great and hard-hitting beat-orientated music can be. JKB says that he created the album "in a very hermit-like state of mind" like it's a bad thing. But damn, the album really sounds like an introspection/self-reflection of a desperate and isolated person. It's definitely an experimental stuff, but it does not sound fucking pretentious like many of experimental music I know. On the contrary, UaT sounds absolutely genuine (in terms of an emotional impact), and genuineness is the main thing that made me appreciate Godflesh.

I'm probably not in a position to judge JKB for hating his own stuff, but TBH I don't dig his statement about UaT and think he cares too much about sanctity of the "true" Godflesh sound. I have always liked his experimental side. I (and many other people in a crowd) wanted to hear something from UaT when I was on the concert last year in Moscow but nope, seems like they've been playing things only from Streetcleaner/Pure/Selfless + Avalanche Master Song, Slateman, (rarely) Love is a Dog from Hell and the new stuff since they started making live performances after the reunion… How do you like those Blakhart guitars they used on these two latest releases? IMO, the 8-string monster added some wierd Meshuggah vibe to the band's sound.

I've learned from Wikipedia that Broadrick hated Us and Them when he released Hymns. Do you know whether he still hates it? When was his latest mention about this album?

Ey mate, hope everything is going OK with you. I see you have already discussed the new Godflesh EP; I think I have similar feelings. It's good but hopefully they expand the palate some on the full-length. Here's a question: is there much difference in the reissue/remaster of the Messiah EP, judged against the original CD-R release? I'm thinking Justin put it out how he wanted it on the CD-R and the re-issue/remaster from a few years later probably just jacks up the volume.

Haha, maybe the preponderance of brutal bludgeoning is what JKB calls "going back to the roots" (as he mentioned it in one of the recent interviews, if my memory isn't playing tricks on me). I kinda agree with you about that, and I hope the album won't be overloaded only with pure ruthless songs. Even dare to say, my favorite part of Godflesh sound is clean-voiced hypnotic pieces like The Internal, Slateman, Mantra, White flag, Frail and other "heavy soundscapes". However, it doesn't mean that I don't appreciate the main, brutal side of Godflesh in the vein of the self-titled EP, Streetcleaner, etc. PS: Justin collaborating with dubstep/future garage pioneers? Very, very interesting. Looking forward to hearing this.

Sup Luke. I'm that dude who was discussing drum and bass with you about a year ago. It seems like you're not very impressed with the new Godflesh stuff, am I right?

That all sounds amazing. I'm big on collecting music so will definitely support you and buy some tapes or CDr's when you get that going. Lately I've just been super busy trying to support myself and finish school. Not much time for listening to new music in the past couple of years :\\ I've just been putting on the usual favorites in the background while I study.
