Arrogant & Hostile

Wed 16 Feb – Band of Horses, Mike Noga at Übel & Gefährlich

Once more we took the drive from Denmark to Hamburg, to go to Club Übel & Gefährlich. Last time I was there, I was amassed but not impressed by the venue.
The club is located on top of a IIWW bunker in the St. Pauli district - hence it screams alternative punk rock. On paper that sounds awesome.
I don't mind that scene at all, but I hate the We-don't-give-a-shit-attitude towards their customers with lusy PR, comfort and service all over. There was hardly any BOH PR to spot in the city, but the show was sold out!! So for me the secrecy get's old before it even starts. Maybe you have to be a part of it to gain some respect and insider advantages. I know the scene, because I've been a part of it back in the days.

Killer supporting act
Before going to the show I checked out the supporting act Mike Noga. It sounded like something I've heard a hundred times before and I'd rather spend my time eating than listening to it. So we tried to be at the venue to maybe catch the last 15 minutes instead. But noo.. Mike Noga played and chatted he's way through an hour as if he had all the time in the world - followed by a 30 minutes changeover!
He obviously had a good time on stage but stole valuable time from the audience on a Wednesday night. Luckily the venue finally opened their extra bar in the back and we could at least pass the time drinking beer.
I don't think you can blame Übel & Gefährlich for the misplaced supporting act, since they are probably touring with BOH, but if there was any enthusiasm to the crowd as we got in, the chatty support killed it.

Finally - The Band
So finally when BOH got on stage the crowd was a bit tired after a dog cold February day and a couple of beers in the warm sold out venue. The cheer as they walked on stage was modest unfortunately. The last time I saw BOH at www.Voxhall.dk it was an entirely different scenario, with a warm welcoming spirit and conversation with the crowd.
This time I almost felt anger form Ben Bridwell. They played the set with edge and noise and barely talked. They walked on stage with a "Hello we are BOH and we are going to play a couple of songs for you alright?" and they walked off stage with a "Thank you - you suck!" (I think) So I got the feeling BOH had as bad as an experience as I did and probably won't come back either.
The minute BOH walked of stage the venue turned on blinding spot light from the stage into the crowd making it unbarrable to stay and hang out. What bigger "fuck off" do you need?

Therefore the name of the club translates to Arrogant & Hostile to me, you won't risk anything but respect visiting the venue.

Thankfully we had a great day im Karoviertel und an der Schanze, so the drive was worth it. There are a lot of great acts coming up and other venues to check out so we will definitely be back in Hamburg.
