The timbres are the most important aspect of Buckner’s music at this point. If these songs can be compared to states of being, then they are absolutely not one-word states like “sad” or “tired.” They are complex, sometimes ambiguous. To make things subjective, so that I can offer an example, the bright timbres on “Escape” beckon me to this phrase: “the tired contentment of sitting on a rickety porch at sunset.”

It’s apparent from the very beginning of the album that Buckner understands well the complexity inherent in timbre: being everything unquantifiable about music, it wavers between rhythm and melody, possibly...
