Tommy & The High Pilots, The Graduate, There for Tomorrow, Ludo
September 15, 2010
9:30 Club
Washington DC

Santa Barbara’s Tommy and the High Pilots kicked off the evening. There were several t-shirts floating around in the crowd advertising the band, whose vocalist Tom Cantillon and drummer Matt Palermo also play in Ludo. They played a good mix of songs off both of their releases, including the title track off their new album American Riviera, just released the week before. Their set was full of energy and it was obvious the crowd was eating it up. Tim Convy and Tim Ferrell, other members of Ludo, joined them on stage for their final songs.

The Graduate, a band from Springfield, Illinois, took the stage second, opening with the title track Anhedonia off their first release. Vocalist Corey Warning’s concise performance and lyric delivery allowed fans to sing along with crowd favorites, Sit and Sink and I Survived off Anhedonia. They played several songs off their new album Only Every Time, including Don’t Die Digging and the new single, Pull Me In, for which Warning announced they had just finished recording a video.

There were a select group of people who were waiting to see There for Tomorrow as they took the stage as the third band to play that evening. Vocalist Maika Maile was dressed in white, down to his black shoes. They played through some of their more popular songs, like A Little Faster and No More Room to Breathe, also performing their cover of Icebox that helped stake their claim on a little piece of the music scene. Another highlight was the song Deathbed, the band’s latest single.

When the lights dimmed for the final time, the theme from Neverending Story filled the venue, with a burst of fog from a machine settled by the drum kit. Ludo took the stage, goofed around for a few minutes, then dove head-first into Go-Getter Greg. Tom Cantillon and Tim Convy kept the energy soaring, playing off of each other’s stage antics. The crowd was enthusiastic, singing every word, even to new songs off their latest release, Prepare the Preparations. Vocalist Andrew Volpe asked the crowd if anyone had seen the video for their new song, Whipped Cream. After quick instructions for the dance from the music video, they launched into the song at full speed, with the crowd dancing along.

Another crowd favorite was Lake Pontchartrain, to which the crowd screamed along. Other notable tracks were the sleeper hit Topeka and Love Me Dead, which was punctuated by literal choreography to the lyrics by Convy and Cantillon, who made the motion to “fingerbang” Volpe’s heart. The show ended on a high note, with Volpe asking the crowd for requests. Someone asked for Girls on Trampolines and after some joking around (early in the show, someone had shouted the request, to which Volpe replied, “There’s a short list of things that aren’t going to happen tonight, guy, and that’s one of them”) Volpe eventually said, “We’re just going to play a cover…of a song called Girls on Trampolines.” Needless to say, the crowd flipped out while members of the other bands joined them onstage, playing various instruments, including a naked mannequin and milk crates. It was a good show from beginning to end, and one attendees won’t soon forget.
