btw - have you ever listened to one of Keith Jarrett's solo concerts? If not - do so. no words can ever describe what he did on those nights.

yeah, my problem with hiphop is that after listening to a lot of free improv, avantjazz etc for years, i simply can't stand 90% of samples used - pointless, shitty melodies that ruin everything. hardly any hiphop out there that could surprise me in terms of production. there are a lot of decent, even great lyricists out there but they often lack visionary producers to work with. anyway, if you're interested, i can recommend saul williams. that guy is one of the very few true musical geniuses in my book. he's the best lyricist i can think of PLUS he experiments a lot in terms of production. he had trent reznor produce a record for him - real unconventional musical thinker. aesop rock is another great rapper with a really wild lyrical imagination who's also very creative in terms of production. those two are probably my all time favorite figures in the world of hiphop, and music in general.

i'm familar with "kitsune bi" - love it! i also adore "toh-kichi" she did with tatsuya yoshida and "live in japan 2004". great pianist. i will check out the yoshihide record. he's so prolific, there is still so much i still have to give a listen to. generally - too much music worth checking out. currently, i've been trying to catch up with the current state of hip hop. so far, it's mostly been a disappointment, though.

don't get me started ;) i have too many actually. anthony coleman's shmutsige magnaten and pushy blueness. ned rothenberg's diaspora suite. marc ribot's exercises in futility. orra by phantom orchard. luminescence by the borah bergman trio. david shea's hsi-yu chi, etc, etc. when it comes to zorn's own stuff, songs from the hermetic theater, the last supper, elegy, six litanies for heliogabalus are some of my favs, but fuck, I almost love anything he does. masada, filmworks.....

Well I like it. But I'm no drone-connoisseur, hehe, and haven't heard it more than a 5-6 times. But live it's a totally different experience! Out of this world. And the gig with Attila was Monoliths & Dimensions in it's entirety. Some photos I took: http://www.flickriver.com/photos/rogerjohnsen/sets/72157623139636285/

Danny Zamir has two other great records on Tzadik. He's an insanely good player, and Zorn teamed him up with some amazing musicians. Children of Israel is my fav.
