Your story of going to see Hillage supporting the Orb reminds me of a similar gig I went to, Faust supporting 4 Tet. I knew nothing of 4 Tet, who were a dance band I think. I'd seen Faust in Cardiff and spoken to Zappi and Jean Herve. I saw them again in London and then in Brighton. I'd mentioned on the Faust email list that the 4 Tet gig had sold out and I was sorry as I'd have loved to see Faust again. Then I got an email saying they'd put me on the guestlist! I was a mature woman in amongst lots of young people but Jean Herve greeted me from the stage so that was alright. It was in the Hammersmith Palais in 2005.

I did used to listen to Steve Hillage in those days but found him boring after National Health. I can remember seeing Dave Stewart and Phil Miller walking though the crowd between the sets. I was a sweet young 17 year old at the time. I went up to them to congratulate them on their set and Phil lunged at me and nearly knocked me over! Dave pulled him off me and apologised. I was so shocked to realise that Phil was drunk and had just played a blinding set!

I know them since Talkie Walkie. Cherry Blossom Girl was on TV and on the radio... And then I discovered Kelly Watch The Stars.

I don't know many Air fans. But I bet more people than I think have Moon Safari and/or the Virgin Suicides soundtrack. Air have been around for a very long time, but I only started listening to them in May this year. I bought the Virgin Suicides soundtrack in 2011, but never really listened to it. I also bought 5:55 and listened to it pretty often. But I never really listened to them. Only every now and then. And then it would only be two tracks from the Virgin Suicides soundtrack.

Cool! I purchased Henry Cow's "Concerts" album a few weeks ago at a record faire / event and discovered that one side of the album was a recording from Oslo, Norway, where I lived for a great while of my life! Unfortunatley I was born 20 years after that concert! Would be really nice to have seen them live. I also see you are a fan of Magma. I admire the hell out of them and I listened alot to the "Mekanik destruktiw kommandoh" but it just never clicked with me.. What other albums would you recommend other than M.D.K.? Ps. Looking at my earlier comment even I have trouble reading it, hehe. I was in a rush when I wrote it!

That's awesome, I would love to have seen Henry Cow live! What I meant is that you should check out Boris if you are into the "drone doom" genre, and that they have some pretty mediocre albums, and some good ones (like Flood)!

    Oktober 2013
  • hoppsan4

You should if you like drone / doom metal! They have some pretty average sludge stuff and even some albums cross over into j-pop but I like their "Flood" album and other doom/drone stuff!

There's a very good chance I would have read your rant, too. As it happens, I was through with punk early in 78 when it started turning ugly. Previous to that it had been boisterous, energetic, and a combination of political anger and outright damned good fun, but then the skinheads and rugby-players started turning up causing trouble and I decided enough was enough. Our band was the victim of a stage invasion/riot from a bunch of rugbyists and I quit the band almost there and then as I was essentially a peaceful, if mouthy, ex hippie. Actually a lot of punks were ex-hippies, I remember having a very secret conversation with another punk at a gig about how Genesis had gone down the tubes since Gabriel left. The only good thing about the night of the riot was that was the night me and my paramour got together, and we are still together now.

I was also lucky enough to see Magma 2 or 3 times in a venue with about 800 capacity. Now that was in intense experience, a match for Van der Graaf who I saw many times

  • bobgreen623

That was the year I went all punk for a while. Looking back a lot of it wasn't that good (but then a lot of prog doesn't wear too well either), but I enjoyed the energy and the sense of outsider-ness which was, again looking back on it, very much a continuation of where I'd been before. I always preferred the smaller venues and more obscure bands - give me Henry Cow, Faust, or the Hatfields in a 200-seater any day. I saw Led Zep in 75 at Earls Court (18000 people) and really didn't enjoy it, same can be said of some of the other big events I went to, like one or two of the Knebworth Shows back in the mid-70's

1975, hmm... I don't have much idea really, I would have been 19 and spending nearly all my time away from the TV, either playing in the band I was in at the time, or going to gigs. Talking of which, one of the best of those gigs of that, or any other year, was Roy Harper with his short-lived band Trigger, which included Chris Spedding and Bill Bruford.

I've just seen a really old shout of yours in 'Nirvana for Mice', talking about it being used in a TV play. Would this have been the dramatization of Jonathan Coe's excellent book 'The Rotter's Club'?

Very sad about Kev. I used to really love his music and saw him a few times in the 70s, then kind of lost touch, but then through LFM in the last couple of years I have been listening to him a lot again and realising how much I still love his music. I will probably have a Kevfest when I get home, he will be much missed by those who loved him, although that number was not as great as it may have been. I suspect Kev was too much a nice bloke to claw his way to the top or sell out to get there. Banana!

Hello Flight123 - Some mighty fine music going on - nice to see some Henry Cow almost in the top flying spot. Sadly too few plays from LastFm in my library - and poor old National Health never get a play by the LastFm elves! I'm now being bathed in cool delights of Steve Hillage's – Four Ever Rainbow - from Rainbow Dome Musick, so I must me kind - nice to hear it without all the scratches and noise for my clear vinyl copy. Warm regards and stay blessed my friend - Paul. Guess it's back to Bob for some proper chat (Hi mate!)

  • bobgreen623

Bloody 'ell, the Robey! I've played there a few times around that period. my friend Mark out of the Astronauts used to put gigs on and play there a lot around that time, but I never saw Lol there.

I did make it, and it was great! I particularly loved Evan Parker's soprano sax set, and also the groups with David Toop and Henry Lowther. There were so many people playing that everyone had 10-minute sets.

    September 2012
  • bobgreen623

There are one or two people playing who I vaguely know, and Lol spent a long time living in Welwyn, where I live, so I suspect there may be a few familiar faces there. hopefully at some point there will be a mass free improv - I will join in with that!! Many many years ago I was in a band that did some recording which had Lol on it which was good fun
