What else... Free is a song from like 1989 she wrote at age 20 or 21.... I think it's beautiful... relate to it lyrically a lot. Suwannee Jo is another old song, she opens with it and it's really INSANE there at the end. I love the guitar in it a lot... God Is Watching is just powerful... she'll like dance around to the groove... I can't help but love it all. Listen to it in some really good headphones on LSD hah... I've done that 4 or 5 times and had like revelations (I also have a huge 2 foot banner of that cover picture in my room).... I dont know if you have the bsides... Billy Joe... Ring Finger... Night (which is too good and deep for words)... and Postcards from East Oceanside was recorded during these sessions... I just think she worked so hard on the record that it's sad people didn't embrace it and her career spiraled downwards... I'm a loyal supporter for life.

I Believe in Love is funky, a non-stop groover and catchy as hell... "Amen" is one of my favorite songs ever... I think the chord progression to it is just so beautiful... and melody is incredible. Lyrically very deep... and then DJ Premier with the scratches in the bridge and the way the whole song starts to build back-up blows me away... La Tonya took time to grow on me but kudos to Paula for trying R&B it's hard as hell to sing and there's some cool things going on in the song... there's an abrupt stop in there... it gets really intense towards the end of the song and the last part she sings is totally amazing.... Pearl is a favorite, I told her to play it live... Be Somebody is incredible... I have an acoustic radio version that is so different, more uptempo but I love it. Rhythm of Life is maybe her most experimental song ever and I think the rapping is really cool. I have a live version of that too that I LOVE.

I don't know if you're a guitar-player yourself but some of her chord changes are rather insane. Or just sonically... the way she produces her albums as far as panning, and using different instruments to make the songs sound gigantic at different spots. I just think it's all of it is genius!

Well... there's no question that all of her albums came from an honest place. Amen I think is actually my favorite one, or tied with This Fire. It was a risky direction to take after This Fire did so well but that's just the kind of artist she is. She's not gonna do a Cowboys Pt. II or revisit something that's already been done. I guess it depends on what you're into... Paula's not necessarily what I listen to to let off steam or just for something that's fun so whether it's mellow or whatever the style doesn't really matter to me. I can get a lot of enjoyment just based on the song-writing and musicianship alone. Bellerose, Kevin Barry, Tony Levin... Gerry Leonard... these people are phenomenal on her records. In a given song there's probably well over 100 different little things to listen for, it's pretty amazing.

Absolutely...She's the shit. Not only the magical voice... it's her skills as a song-writer and with production/arrangements that do it for me. She's exceptional at playing like 20 different instruments and has touched on a wide array of music styles. Not afraid to let the expletives fly in some songs if that's how she's feeling. She's a real renaissance woman... what else... the way she ends all shows with the killer beatbox at the end of Jolene. She grooves out and has her rocking songs... She's as badass as any metal person IMO. it's very nice to see someone also open-minded. :)

Hey man thanks for the answer on Waiting In The Wings track. I actually just laughed at the comment I left in June 2009 as back then I was not familiar with Jack Bruce or his great voice. BBM was my introduction to him. Now got quite a few of his excellent solo albums including the jazz one he did & that fantastic live album Seven Moons he did with Robin Trower last year.

Hey there, in reply to you last Celestial Mass post, you should definately check out Chrome Hoof's 'Pre-Emptive False Rapture' album. You can listen to it on Spotify (if you use it). It really is worth hearing, I assure you!
