Thu 27 Sep – Arts Alive! presents Lavay Smith & Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers

Miss Thing put on a heck of a show, but I think it would have taken a defibrillator to breath life into the crowd at the show tonight. It half looked like a nursing home was emptied into the auditorium, and it was almost a joke that a funeral home was one of the sponsors of the event.

The show was strange to me on a lot of levels. For this type of band, I really would have liked some open area, not all fixed seats. Also, they would only allow people into the theater during breaks between songs. It was just sort of different.

Lavay Smith & Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers did two decent length sets, both of which were a mix between their original material and standards. Both sets started out with a couple of instrumentals to show case the incredible talent of the Skillet Lickers (who were definitely Red Hot). I kept thinking during the sets that Lavay has a lip snarl that Billy Idol would be proud of, and she put it to good use.

I could probably make better sense of this if I waited until the morning, but I am just going to post before I hit the sack.
