How to add a counter in your page

24. Apr. 2007, 2:35

Some people has asked me about this a couple of times, so I decided to make a detailed guide of the procedure.

1.Register in statcounter in:

2. After the registration you will be redirected to a confirmation page, click in 'Add a statcounter project'

3. Select 'Standard StatCounter Project' and click 'Next'

4. Enter the name of your project in 'Website Title' it can be anything for example: 'My Page'

5. Copy the url of your page , for example my url is, and paste it in 'Website URL'

6. Select other options that are better explained in the page and in 'Public Stats' check the box if you want to allow everyone to see the detailed view of your stats (example), then click next.

7. In the page that apears click 'Configure & Install Code'

8. Select 'Visible Counter' option and click 'Next'

9. Select what do you want to display in the counter, unique or total visits, Click 'Next'.

10. Select 'Counter Image Option' and click 'Next'

11. Customize the apperance of your counter and use the button 'Update' to preview the changes,

12. If you want to make your stats public in 'Add a 'View My Stats' Link?' check 'Add the Link?' and click next.

13. In 'Do you use a web page editor?' select 'No, I want the default install guide', select the 'OPTIONAL - HTML Only Counter' option and click 'Next'

14. You will be redirected to a page with a box,The text in the box looks like this:

<a href=""; target="_blank"><img src=""; alt="hit counter" border="0"></a>

copy only the url after src=" and add image tags to it, like this but without the '***'

15. [OPTIONAL] If you want to make your counter behave like a link to your detalied stats, visit your statcounter account and click in 'My Projects' > 'Your project name', copy its url and add it to the counter code like this:

16. Paste your code in the about me box in your settings page:

and click 'save details'

17. Visit your page and to test it, it should show 00001.

18. You can see your detailed stats visiting your statcounter account and clicking 'My Projects' > 'Your project name'

If you find some confusing step or an English mistake please let me know.

Like I said I already have it installed now but I find that step no. 15 on it was a bit different for me. The Img tag looked something like this for me:;java=0&amp;security=6e7f0ece&amp;invisible=0 So I had to remove the amp; part to get it to work. How did you get the codes without that? I also followed the exact same steps when I did it and I'm just curious now. :)

hmmm I really don't know I was following the steps while I was writing , I didn't do anything different from what is written. I think it's a mystery :), I'll add an note about that in the procedure.

For some reason Adblock blocks all images on your site. So I disabled it on that page and it works fine now.

so i got my code and followed the exact steps as written, even changed the '&amp;'s to the '&'s, copy pasted correctly everything into my settings and all i get when i look at my page is this: [IMG]src=;java=0&amp;security=96c1341f&amp;invisible=0[/IMG] but no picture or counter or nothing... u can see it on my profile

do not add the ' src= ' part, and make sure you change all the &amp; to & I still see one &amp; in your code

Will this also work if someone from another country visits you page? Because then, the adress is not, but for example

  • C26000

hmmm I don't know, but I supouse that it should work, because the counter increases the value everytime that the counter image is loaded and the image is loaded exactly the same in any language version of the site.

Well this counters have got a defect too. I realised that the counter counts the users ip too, because they were created for web sites. And they count them many times, not just once. So the user can create a counter and after he puts it in the description of the profile , he starts to visit his own page, and to press reconnect button. The counts are increasing and then he will look cool , because the others will think that he is a very popular person. So if the user is a honest person and [b]wants to see the true statistic HE MUST[/b] add his own ip on the Blocked ip when he creates the counter. But the others can not check if he did or he did not. In another order of ideas, it's very easy to create a counter in paint, and to put a big number and to use a special font. After all of this i find this counters and badeges as trend stuff. If you really want to see how popular you are, bookmark the adress of your counter and check it. That's my piece of advice. In my opinion a counter is good and usefull at , only for groups.

[quote]HE MUST add his own ip on the Blocked ip when he creates the counter.[/quote] Well... But if his IP is not STATIC? If IP is DYNAMIC?

Thanks very much for that. I've been wondering about that ever since I saw one on a new friend's page but didn't want to straight away bother him with tech stuff and, you know, it's like things come to you if they are meant to be... :) Great week to you!
