Mon 28 Jan – Art Brut, A Human
First things first, the support from A Human was very good, not a leading band by any stretch but they were certainly more than adequate, theircover of A Horse With No Name in particular went down well. Lively front man and I reckon they have a future ahead of them in the underground at least.
And so on to the mist shrouded, mystery coated headline band, Art Brut. I say this because whoever was on the dry ice machine seems to have sat on it and forgotten about it, as such, there was so much fake smoke in the air come the start of the first song, "Pump Up The Volume" that we could not see any of the band. Nor could Eddie find the mic, missing the entire first verse, his own confession confirming this at the end, and seeing Eddie Argos come sweltering out of the smoke in front of me is something I shall remember for a very long time.
Now, I'm not even going to TRY and be impartial here. Without wanting to shell out £50 on a ticket or resurecting anybody from the dead, Art Brut are what I would consider to be my "favourite band" and they never fail to raise a smile on my face. Jasper's own face, and Eddie's quips in between songs kept this trend up right through the gig, and even now as I remember it.
The band were on top, TOP form and the crowd reacted well.
We even set off the fire alarm.
Out of two albums worth of songs, they managed to play all of them bar 6. Fight!, 18,000 Lira, Stand Down, Blame It On The Trains, Sound Of Summer, and People In Love being the unfortunate numbers. The songs they did play however were played astonishingly well. They even managed to squeeze in a new song at the end. Sounded good. A few blips here and there such as in St Pauli and My Little Brother, but apart from that, they were spot on and nobody ever minds Eddie changing the words, he always does that anyway.
And would probably continue to do so regardless of whether or not we minded.
And amongst all that jumping and pointing and shouting and jostling, a great time was had by all.
Even Freddie Feedback smiled a little :P
In all seriousness though, this was a fantastic gig, and my friends were glad dragged them along, even if I did leave them at the back whilst I went off glory hunting up front.
It was worth it though, best gig I've been to in a long long time.
My Personal highlights were My Little Brother, both Good and Bad Weekends, Emily Kane, I Will Survive (not a cover) and their best song, Nag Nag Nag Nag
Art Brut, Top Of The Pops.
I do however, remain frustrated at their lack of willing to recreate Jasper and Eddie's YouTube German MTV Karaoke rendition of Boom Boom Boom Boom, AND their inability to play 18,000 Lira. It only lasts 1.30!!
