Path of the reincarnations for a song: Summer Wine
22. Jan. 2008, 14:35
Do YOU fear your karma? You should. Redemption in the next life - what a magnificent way to screw things up in this one, yet become a better, greater, god-like & so on person... after just a few centuries.
Music has it's own way throughout history. Unfortunately, it doesn't always lead to new heights. Cover versions are often considered to express an artist lack of own ideas (?!). Why not expression of admiration... moreover, some songs just.. need.. another chance. (Yeah, yeah, "only the one who wrote it can feel it, original is best...")
And finally, even songs need a change sometimes - why not switch over to another genre?
But I think I got carried away with the controversy.
I was about to comment the faith of one particular song. Summer Wine, for a start.
In the beginning (1967), there was Nancy Sinatra Nice, Nancy, such a wonderful sugary voice. Even the instrumental sounds full and luscious. Except for... well, yes the male vocals. Pity, I thought in the good old times artist actually HAD to be EXCEPTIONALLY good to be famous.
COnclusion: Original pleases my ears, still there is something not quite right. I wouldn't recommend the video. Try this one Same thing, yet not in black and white and withoud the need to look at Lee Hazlewood (respect for his lyrics, not for his looks) (Bang Bang has an intrigueing remix with an interesting video, although not too impressive as an achievement in music)
Then... well, then were Bono & The Corrs In fact, there isn't much to tell about this cover. With all my respect for Bono, all quiet in the music front. Figuratively, as ill luck would have it. Still, hear it if you're a fan.
Moimir Papalescu & The Nihilists Now there is something new and interesting. As mentioned, most cover versions expiate Lee's vocals, but as for Nancy's..., nevermind. "charismatic glamourous singer La Petite Sonja ", not for me, really. sounds better, i suppose... Still, this version really differs from the original, therefore we can call it a success.
Not really fresh andd new, yet closest to most people's minds: the version of Ville Valo & Natalia Avelon Except for the better, 21st century video and richer instrumental, the interpretation itself brings us nothing. And... (I told you about the missfortune of the female vocals, right?)
But Ville Valo, he amazed me. Finally showed your pop-self out of the dark clothes, didn't you? Finally!!
Ville actually proved he could sing. He used the impressive timbre of his voice s he should have done long ago: no weeping, no hiccuping, no sobbing, just.. singing... THANK YOU, MTV-ORIENTATED, ROTTEN, GLOSSY, /&*&%*@#7 MISIC INDUSTRY!
Feel free to add more to this cute litle song's history. No cursing, please.
