Say hello to the sound of London 2009.
thecocknbullkid is 23 year old Hackney girl, Anita Blay, who cleverly weaves her deepest and darkest in and under shiny, glitzy layers of contemporary pop.

On the one hand, her appreciation of artists such as Morrissey, Kate Bush, and Björk influences how she expresses herself in her lyrics. On the other is her very evident knowledge of 80s electronica, soul, funk, hip-hop and dance music. The two combined make for the most exciting thing to come out of London this year, according to the NME.
What she does is play with dark and light, positive and negative, socially acceptable and taboo. In interview, she even hints to some ambiguity to her sexuality, but I'm not buying it, that's got to be sales hype! I reckon she's a straight girl aiming for the gay market like one of her other heroines, Goldfrapp. Nothing wrong with that, that's where trends begin.
If you watch 'Later... with Jools Holland', you may remember her appearance last year, highly unusual for an unsigned artist. She signed to Island Records in March this year and this is her first EP.
There are four tracks, all of them exploring themes of revenge and regret. What's interesting is she is not judgemental about her dark side, for example, she doesn't feel bad that she is capable of hurting someone's feelings and actually feel happy about it. It's a twisted pleasure we all feel but none of us admit to. She is not so much holding a mirror up to herself so much as acknowledging her humanity. Reading about her life, we understand she has every right to be beholden to her demons, yet she seems to have overcome them and if anything, found a way to monetise and make a career out of describing them.

So we have an intelligent, lucid young woman, observing herself and the world around her, which is how she encapsulates the zeitgeist so well. We are in the grip of a vicious recession and we are all suffering behind painted smiles. That's what her music is - an attractive veneer with deceptive depths and half-hidden meanings. Her music twists and turns like beautiful shoals of fish in sunlit waters.

Kiss Kiss Kill - "You can't kiss until you learn to kill". This sinister but catchy track sets the tone. What stands out is how sweet her voice is. You don't expect such a pleasant voice to deliver such threatening lyrics.
Clean Apart - "Oh me, Oh my, Pain has been romanticised" where thecocknbullkid, finding herself with a philanderer, is the jiltee, calling the whole thing off. (a lot of blogs are carrying this track and it has been here in Last.fm for months as a free download.)
Boys and Girls - my favourite from the EP, reminiscent of so many 80s thumping bass dance tracks inspired by Chic. Electronica touching on morbid disco. Sorry, I haven't sat still long enough to figure out the lyrics!
I'm Not Sorry - the current single. This is her
Non, je ne regrette rien.
