Karen O is our new timeless beauty, our charismatic heroine. For me, she's all Siouxsie Sioux, Blondie and Chrissie Hynde, with Angelica Huston's dramatic looks.

When I was little, I wanted to be like my rock chick heroines, then I grew up and I have been (a bit) and now I want to be 20 again so I can be like Karen O. I want her hair, her clothes, her shoes, her figure, her looks, her mad sense of abandonment and her crazy joie de vivre. This girl doesn't care what people think. If she's feeling it, she's feeling it, and if she isn't, she isn't. This is the confidence that sets her apart from her contemporaries. If there's one woman I'd put money on who will still be performing in her 50s and beyond, it's Karen.

I think it's that truly carefree attitude which has carried the whole band successfully from their debut to today with the release of their third album, It's Blitz!. What comes across to me more than anything is their sincerity and integrity. And introducing a synthpop / electro disco element to their music tells us they're in tune not only with themselves but also with the current climate and what we might enjoy. There's a connectedness, a wholeness there that's as attractive as the band's sense of fun.

The third album isn't at all what I was expecting. What I thought I'd get was upbeat, lively, rock-y party music. What I got was a completely different energy with some quieter, more thoughtful and quite beautiful numbers thrown in, such as Hysteric and the soothing Little Shadow. It's like a fizzy sweet - hard shell, soft juicy centre. And the colour is a euphoric neon bright.

Guests on the album include TV on the Radio's Tunde Adebimpe on backing vocals (on Shame and Fortune) and David Sitek in producer role.

So on to this week's reco and the first single, Zero. Nothing much happens in the video apart from Karen O looking gorgeous and making everyone she meets on the high street happy. It doesn't sound like much but from Karen O's magic smile to the infectious and fake rock-y dance beat, it keeps you watching. She dances in the street, she dances in the rain, she dances on car roofs even. The guys looking cool and bored under the sale signs in the discount shop, with glitterball lights and shiny confetti is just brilliant. Very, very funny, and very now.

Nice pick! I agree that Karen has arrived at a 'drop dead' look - However, for me this is distinct from at the start of the decade, when I'd have characterised her as rascally cute and little more, looks wise. Zero's on my loved tracks, fo'sure. Trough currently, I'm preferring Heads Will Roll, with Runaway. What's more, I think, these songs have legs and I'm sure I'll be on heavy-rotation for some considerable time. - Best, Ian

Thanks for the comment, Linus-Grunger. The journal wrote itself, I just followed it, lol. I'm really in love with 'Hysteric', I think it might pip Zero for me, although that's so violently happy, it's hard to resist. :)
