TWENTYFIVE! - I think not. Let's make do with ten.

Bessie Smith

First song you heard: Damn, do people remember these things? I have not the faintest idea. Still, I discovered the Empress of the Blues only a few years ago. Could be Downhearted Blues.
Favourite song: Gimme a Pigfoot and a Bottle of Beer
Favourite album: Do Your Duty
Accuracy: She has been competing with Laibach for the top position for a long time. I have a lot of songs from each, so perhaps it's not very accurate. I don't feel like I listen to her songs so much. She just seems to fit in well into all my playlists =)

First song you heard: Leben Heisst Leben
Favourite song: Germania
Favourite album: Jesus Christ Superstars or NATO
Accuracy: Yeah, Laibach rules.

First song you heard: Suojelusenkeli
Favourite song: Mandschurian Kummut
Favourite album: Surut pois ja kukka rintaan
Accuracy: Viikate should be number one in many ways. They speak to my inner Finnish male. Luckily I'm not one really...

My Dying Bride
First song you heard: The Cry of Mankind, I think. I wasn't quite convinced. One of my best friends introduced me to a whole lot of metal and some goth rock in one go in the late 1990's. It took a while before I found out what I really liked.
Favourite song: Edenbeast
Favourite album: The Light at the End of the World
Accuracy: I'm surprised they're so near the top. The band speaks to my theatrical side, I suppose.

Giacomo Puccini
First song you heard: I have an early, clear memory of Puccini in connection to the Tatar prince's aria in Turandot, Nessun Dorma.
Favourite song: E Lucevan Le Stelle
Favourite album: Turandot (yeah, I know that doesn't say much... But I can't be bothered to dig up production info...)
Accuracy: Tosca, Turandot and Madame Butterfly are very interesting operas and I never get tired of exploring different versions of them. Blame my theatrical taste, again...

Johnny Cash
First song you heard: (Ghost) Riders in the Sky. This song is also a childhood favourite of mine. Cash's version is the ultimate.
Favourite song: see above
Favourite album: The Essential Johnny Cash
Accuracy: Cash could read the phone book and I would listen.

First song you heard: Серебро (probably prompted by my Russophile sister)
Favourite song: Ангелы
Favourite album: Иnoмарки
Accuracy: тру рок!

Josephine Baker
First song you heard: J'ai Deux Amours
Favourite song: Madiana
Favourite album: Breezin' Along - she sang better when she got older, but she just sounds so damn cute in these early recordings, especially when she is scat singing.
Accuracy: She is the Jazz Age princess!

First song you heard: Pelasta Maailma
Favourite song: Baikonur
Favourite album: Talvikuningas
Accuracy: Finnish sci-fi progressive rock FTW

Paul Robeson
First song you heard: Ol' Man River (in the movie Show Boat - love at first sight! He put so much emotion and power - and defiance! in a single performance that could have been conforming and demeaning.)
Favourite song: St. Louis Blues
Favourite album: Songs for Free Men
Accuracy: If I had more albums by him, he would be higher up the charts. I have an enormous historical crush on him. Just listen to his version of Joe Hill, the famous song about a Swedish-American labour activist, which I practically grew up with.
