I'm looking for bands similar to Muse. What I am searching is this kind of electronic, synth, rock, progressive sound, but harmonically influenced by late romantic classical music. It's just a modern sound (electronic, rock) but with a classical harmonic basis. I already know Muse, Pure Reason Revolution, Kiss Kiss, Oceansize, Mystery Jets, Radiohead...

"Muse... are still one of the most talented bands on this planet" In case you haven't realized, everything you have just said is exclusively your opinion. To me, Muse's musicianship is just mediocre. Not to mention that their lyrics are nothing short of unintelligent and pretentious.

If there is consensus on using this for prog-ish "alt-rock" bands this can be an useful tag. Muse, Mew and Pure Reason Revolution probably fit, Radiohead not quite and acts like Porcupine Tree are better with the "full" progressive rock tag.

Uh, for all you haters on muse, just because they've grown to become a little bit more "mainstream," they are still one of the most talented bands on this planet. And if you think they suck, listen to the new exo-genesis, citizen erased, and exo-politics. All of these songs are symbolically transcendent compared to all other bands in the genre, just read the lyrics of exo-politics.

Muse are probably the best example of New Prog. They don't quite fit the old "Progressive" genre so this is a good tag for them.

I think expansive rock would be a better tag (not a genre) would be better.Alot of Indie & Alternative rock bands do not expand, experiment or broaden their style or approach to the music they make.Although some of the bands tagged new prog are not very expansive either but sound vaguely like 70's rock (prog).Alternative & Indie rock are not genres either to my ears. What is Alternative rock alternative to any more.Indie means they are on a Indie label or a sub-label of a major label ???? Bands these days seem to have diverse influences & it is hard to tag their style - I can't blame people trying myself.New Prog is at least a good attempt - although don't agree with some of the artists in this tag.

Placing Muse in a same row with God is an Astronaut and Radiohead in a same row with Oceansize, Amplifier and The Mars Volta... It's just some kind of joke

wickeand000, I agree with you that bands must be labeled what they are... But that's the point! They are NOT new prog. Most of them can be seen on top list in 'post-rock' and 'progressive rock' tags so that's what they are. New prog is just one more fake tag like 'music i like' or 'misic my girlfriend i lived with in 1992 liked'.

My favorite artists is Porcupine Tree, Big Big Train, Gazpacho. They have relations in Marillion. Big Big Train has been influenced from Oceansize.

zy0rg, i understand your point, but why not label bands what they are. Overall it will screw up the tags for the site, but each band will have a few fitting tags instead of 50 tags that just miss the mark. now if only there was a way to physically punish people for making tags like: "OMG_HES_SO_HOT!!!!"

And by the way I don't think that wiki could be considered a serious source of information... Let's not forget that it is open encyclopedia so anyone could write that article.

Cool genre. Let's create thousands more genres like "new rap", "new alternative", "new post progressive industrial metal"... I understand that some people may want to unite bands they see similar... But if everyone will create their own tags then in a few years we'll see lastfm full of shity tags used for 10-20 bands.

Coldplay would not be included in this (not so brilliant ) sub-genre as they have very little elements of progressive elements in their music. The progressive elements of U2 (very little in their music even) have been stripped out of their sound.I find Doves streches the tag a bit as well.I would call Radiohead proto - New Prog (following the way genres are described these days anyway!!!). I use the New Prog term sometimes to see if groups are any good - there are mixed results I would say, though these groups have generally greater musical ability than most alternative groups.

Radiohead is the epitome of new prog by the definition. They have way more prog elements than the bands listed here :/ I dont mind the concept of "new prog" as its reasonably well defined (unlike indie and alternative) even if it is vague.

Rotuhiiri, you've just showed your close-mindedness. Not only Muse, but also Oceansize, Amplifier, Pure Reason Revolution and many other bands are considered to be new prog.
