Alright, as we near the end of this first Y2K decade, it's time to take a look back at all the best Albums that have been released in the last 40 years.

I'll start off this extensive research with 2000, up until 2009. I'll then go back to 1980, all the way up to 1999, to then wrap things up with the 70s and before.

I'll be choosing my Top 25 Albums for each year; an ordered Top 10, and ~15 others worth mentioning. I'm also considering the live albums and EPs (~5), but they have their own section since songs on these have usually been released on official releases. The final result will be a Top 1000 for Official Albums, and Top ~250 for Live/EP albums.

These are general rankings of how I see them today, and based on my Last.FM songs playcounts (2005-now) put through the formula:

Thanks to MediaMonkey and its amazing scripting abilities, that formula gives an Album's REAL playcount, taking into consideration every song's lenght & playcount in relation to the overall album's lenght and # of songs on it.

Besides each Year, you get the Total of all Albums' Playcounts and the average of all Albums' Ratings. (x / %)

Note that I haven't necessarily discovered and enjoyed all these albums on their released years, some I discovered years later. So these are also based on how important (to me) some of these albums were at the time.

Στην προχθεσινή συναυλία με τράβηξαν τα πολλά λεγόμενα περί καλού πρότερου εμφανισιακού βίου του γάλλου συνθέτη, καθώς και η καλοπροαίρετη -ανίκητη- περιέργειά μου! Δεν το μετάνιωσα... Αν και κάπως προκατειλημμένος για τους συνθέτες που παίζουν με ηλεκτρονικούς ήχους και προγραμματισμούς, αντί με φυσικές νότες και όργανα, το δίδυμο των σαλονικιών loopers με άφησε άφωνο με το γλαφυρό λυρισμό του και την ατμόσφαιρα που δημιούργησε! Χωρίς να κουράζει, χωρίς να προκαλεί παρά μόνο τις αισθήσεις, χωρίς να φαμφαρίζει, η μουσική των Your hand in mine ήταν ένα υπέροχο, πλουραλιστικό, γεμάτο έκφραση ταξίδι. Και ναι, φάνηκε και...στο χειροκρότημα, όπου το πολυπληθέστατο κοινό αναγνώρισε με ειλικρίνεια και αυθορμητισμό την αξία του support. Ήταν η σειρά του Yann Tiersen να συναντήσει τον κόσμο. Η συναυλία ήταν sold-out, ο χώρος βρωμούσε ασχετίλα, με πρώτο και οσμηρότερο το τομάρι του υποφαινόμενου! Όλοι περίμεναν τον μεγάλο πρωταγωνιστή της βραδιάς. Και νομίζω ότι η στροφή προς μια πιο δυνατή και ηλεκτρική σκηνική παρουσία, συγκριτικά με την ήπιων τόνων διάθεση που συχνά συναντά κανείς στις συνθέσεις του, ήταν συνειδητότατη και δεν απογοήτευσε κανέναν. Είδαμε έναν καλλιτέχνη με τα όλα του, με τα μυαλά ακόμη στο κεφάλι του παρά την ευρεία αναγνώρισή του, προσηλωμένο στο στόχο μιας σωστής, επαγγελματικής εμφάνισης, εκφραστικότατο (ιδιαίτερα όταν ξέμενε μόνος με το βιολί του), αλλά... Αλλά; Προσωπική εκτίμησή μου είναι ότι δεν έφταιγε η επιφανειακή, μουσική σχέση μου με τον Yann Tiersen, ούτε αυτός ο ίδιος που το live κατέληξε για μένα μέτριο. Πιστεύω απλά ότι τα αρνητικά σημεία που υποκειμενικά εντόπισα "χτυπούσαν" πραγματικά άσχημα σε ευαίσθητες χορδές μου. Κυριότερο, η απουσία, κυριολεκτικά και μεταφορικά των φωνητικών! Έλειπαν, είτε γιατί χρειαζόταν να στηρίξουν τις συνθέσεις, είτε γιατί δεν είδα ούτε έναν αληθινό vocalist στη σκηνή. Δεύτερον, υπήρξαν φορές, που ο ήχος από τις κιθάρες μπούκωνε τόσο που..."έψαχνα" να ακούσω τα τύμπανα! Τρίτον, δεν μπόρεσα να ξεσηκωθώ ούτε για ένα -ολόκληρο- τραγούδι, παρά την γερή δόση ρυθμού. Συμπέρασμα, ναι μεν, αλλά... Αλλά!
υγ: ο Matt Elliott μοιράστηκε τη σκηνή με τον Yann Tiersen, με κιθάρες και φωνητικά! Ευτυχώς, έπαιξε με εφέ και απήγγειλε (με αρτιότατη τονικότητα), γιατί αν έμενε στην προσπάθεια να τραγουδήσει δε θα είχα τίποτε να θυμάμαι από αυτόν!
η βαθμολογία μου: 6,5/10
+ η ευχάριστη έκπληξη: το όλο γεγονός ήταν μια ευχάριστη έκπληξη-να βλέπεις χαρισματικούς δημιουργούς να βγάζουν τα σώψυχά τους επί σκηνής...

* in English, please: I went to the concert without knowing a lot about Tiersen's music. It was not a disapointment, but I didn't really enjoyed it that much! Matt Elliott played together with Yann Tiersen, there was a lot of energy and power, as well as some more lyrical parts in the setlist. I didn't quite like the vocals, and in certain times the sound was not perfect at all. In any case, Yann Tiersen is worth seeing live-but, personally speaking, once is enough! ps: this is my first time trying to sum up my greek review in English. It is 100% subjective opinions! If you are interested in any previous reviews, I would gladly write some words in English, too. Thanks for reading!

Η χθεσινή συναυλία του Yann Tiersen στο Principal ήταν μία συναυλία εκπλήξεων. Μακράν οι περισσότερες για μένα ήταν ευχάριστες.

Έκπληξη πρώτη χρονικά - θετική - ήταν οι δικοί μας Your Hand In Mine. Δύο άτομα, παίζοντας με μια σωρεία μουσικών οργάνων μας χάρισαν πολύ όμορφες και μελωδικές συνθέσεις. Για όση ώρα ήταν πάνω στη σκηνή μας πρόσφεραν μουσικές διαδρομές γεμάτες μικρές εκπλήξεις, όπου σχεδόν όλες έδεναν αρμονικά μεταξύ τους, δίνοντας στο τέλος ένα εύηχο και απολαυστικό αποτέλεσμα. Ο νέο-ρομαντικός ήχος τους στα cd τους, όπως και στη συναυλία δεν μπορεί παρά να σου δημιουργήσει συνειρμούς με τη μουσική του μετρ του είδους: τον Yann Tiersen φυσικά που ακολουθούσε.

Εκεί έρχεται η δεύτερη και μεγαλύτερη ευχάριστη έκπληξη. Ότι ξέραμε για τις δουλειές του Tiersen από τις ταινίες και τα cd του έπρεπε να το ξεχάσουμε. Όσοι θέλανε να περιπλανηθούν σε γλυκά και ρομαντικά μονοπάτια παρέα με την Αμελί, τους πρωταγωνιστές του Good Bye Lenin, αλλά και άλλων γνωστών παρόμοιων δουλειών του είμαι σίγουρος πως απογοητεύτηκαν. Και απ όσο ξέρω ήταν πολλοί. Από την άλλη, όσοι ήταν έτοιμοι να ακούσουν τον Tiersen απογυμνωμένο από κάθε ίχνος «γλυκιάς» μουσικής από πάνω του και να δεχτούν για μιάμιση ώρα ένα πλήθος μελαγχολικών, σκοτεινών, πολλές φορές και στοιχειωτικών, πάντα με δυνατές εντάσεις και εξάρσεις μελωδιών, τότε έζησαν πραγματικά μια πανέμορφη εμπειρία. Στη δεύτερη κατηγορία ανήκω κι εγώ. Τα τραγούδια που έπαιξε δεν ήταν καινούρια, όλα βρίσκονται στις προσωπικές δουλειές του, ωστόσο ήταν τόσο αλλαγμένα που μετά βίας μπορούσες να τα αναγνωρίσεις. Τραγούδια που με τόσο μαεστρία αποδόμησε και διαστρέβλωσε δίνοντας έναν καινούριο και πρωτότυπο ήχο στις παλιές του συνθέσεις. Έντονα κιθαριστικά στοιχεία, post rock λεξιλόγιο τα οποία συνδυασμένα με τις πανέμορφες και βιρτουόζικες μελωδίες στο βιολί αποτελούσαν τους κύριους άξονες πάνω στους οποίους κινήθηκε η συναυλία. Μετά από ένα σημείο σταμάτησε να με απασχολεί η αναγνώριση και επεξήγηση των κομματιών του κι αφέθηκα πραγματικά στην έντονη συναισθηματικά φορτισμένη μουσική του Tiersen.

Για την τρίτη (θετική κι αυτή) έκπληξη να πω την αλήθεια ντρέπομαι λίγο μια και εκ των υστέρων έμαθα ότι δίπλα στον Tiersen ήταν ο Matt Elliott, ένας από τους αγαπημένους μου συνθέτες τον τελευταίο χρόνο. Τι και αν μου πέρασε από το μυαλό ότι κάποια τραγούδια έφερναν προς Elliott; Ποτέ δεν φανταζόμουν ότι θα τους έβλεπα επί σκηνής μαζί. Κι όμως ήταν εκεί καθισμένος στην καρέκλα του με την κιθάρα πότε απαγγέλλοντας και πότε κάνοντας φωνητικά τα οποία είναι τόσο χαρακτηριστικά στις τελευταίες δουλείες του. Ίσως το στοιχειωτικό και μυστηριακό κομμάτι της συναυλίας να οφείλεται στην συνύπαρξη των δύο αυτών αντρών μαζί.

Στο τέλος αφήνω ένα-δυο (μικρά ευτυχώς) αρνητικά. Αν κι εμένα καθόλου δεν μου στέρησε από την απόλαυση τα κάνα δυο εμφανή προβλήματα που υπήρχαν στον ήχο, αυτό που δεν μ’ άρεσε τόσο ήταν η ερμηνευτική ικανότητα ή απόδοση στα τραγούδια με στίχους του Tiersen και της μπάντας του. Δεν ξέρω, μπορεί να ήμουν κακομαθημένος να ακούω τις δουλειές του ερμηνευμένες από τον Dominique A, την Claire Pichet και την Shannon Wright, αλλά οι φωνητικές ερμηνείες κατά τη γνώμη μου ήταν μέτριες. Ευτυχώς δεν ήταν πολλές και άρα ικανές ώστε να κάνουν ζημιά στη διάθεση.

Ο Tiersen σ’ αυτή τη συναυλία διάλεξε να φορέσει ένα μουσικό προσωπείο το οποίο είναι εντελώς ξένο με τη συμβολική εικόνα του: δηλαδή του νέο-κλασικού – νέο-ρομαντικού συνθέτη όπου με γλυκές και παστέλ χρωματισμένες μελωδίες μας κάνει και περνάμε ευχάριστες-αισιόδοξες στιγμές. Όποιοι ξέρουν λίγο καλύτερα τη δουλειά του θα μπορούσαν να βρουν μέσα στις συνθέσεις του σκοτεινές γωνιές και έντονες μελαγχολικές διαθέσεις. Αυτή την πλευρά θέλησε να μας δώσει εχθές μέσω έντονης ηλεκτρικής δύναμης, όπου έλειπε σχεδόν κάθε χαρούμενη νότα. Όσοι ήταν σε διάθεση να αγκαλιάσουν το μαύρο αυτό προσωπείο του Tiersen τότε πρέπει να ένιωσαν πολύ τυχεροί για τις συγκινήσεις που δέχτηκαν. Οι υπόλοιποι αρκέστηκαν στις μελωδίες των Your Hand In Mine.
