Really loving MrSweep's interpretation, whether or not that's how it was written. Beautiful song either way.

Also, although the lyrics are very critical they are delivered in a gentle, loving tone, and they are intended with love. That is the contrast which makes it interesting for me.

Sure they do, it's just a little unusual: "You don't belong, where the humans eat, you don't belong, don't belong to me" Under this interpretation, it's about someone he had a lot of friction with, someone who had trouble relating to other people properly (and as result was quite unpleasant at times). Spiritually, he didn't belong somehow... and when he passed away it made an odd kind of sense. So Willy wrote a song about him, and rather than twist it to pretend this guy was some all round well-loved chap (as we have a tendency to do), he talks about honestly about his flaws, but uses it to say that he "didn't belong to us"; it's very poetic, and a proper tribute to his character. Of course, that's just an interpretation. But there's no reason why it doesn't make sense. In fact, the song has had a lot more power for meever since I arrived at that perspective.

When I saw him at End of the Road he dedicated this song to a passed away friend of his. I think the lyrics make a lot more sense in that context...
