Ok now I can relate, I would even agree about the riffs and the vocals are sometimes weak, but it's still not a bad album to me, there are still plenty of good vocal lines and also some nice riffs here and there. BUT on the other hand, Katorz still amazes me to this day, every song has at least one strong mesmerizing riff that can carry the whole song and Snake has so much power on that album, it just blows me away, not to speak of the drumming which is wicked and way better than on the selftitled and Infini. The selftitled was a nice comeback, but it is sometimes boring and uninspired and lacks in production = guitar sound is shit, but overall it's still good and has some brilliant songs like Rebel Robot, The Multiverse, Divine Sun or We Carry On. So I can relate to constructive criticism about certain albums, but a general saying like "they went down hill after x" is stupid to me and mostly there to provoke fans.

I can accept the fact that they have changed easily. Liking it however is a whole different story. I doubt Rush will ever put out albums as good as their classics. Snakes and Arrows is finally a good album after their 90's stuff (except some of Test for Echo). I can argue that Inifni is a bad album though. The riffs are generally unexciting, only hints of the dense chords that once defined Voivod. Nirvanish whiny vocals dont help their cause either.

Let's make a comparison to Rush. You obviously like their lastest stuff (S&A, TFE), but what would say if someone comes along and says "This band went downhill after Power Windows."? It's just stupid generalizing of your own taste. I mean, you should at least come up with some arguments...

That's just your opinion, it's not a fact like you are putting it. Just because it's not your style anymore doesn't equal to Voivod going down hill. You know, they never cared for what the fans wanted to hear, so they don't care if it's your style, but there are many fans who like it. And by "most people" I mean exactly what I said, most people are closeminded and can't accept change and bands evolving in their style.

Phobos is mediocre at best. People like me? Elaborate on what you mean by that. I hardly compare the classics I merely understand that their classics are there and they also happen to be better. What I mean is by changing they created a collection of mediocre albums. Nothing praise worthy. In other words...they did in fact go down hill with Infini being their worst.

One last thing: Who knows if they would have even released the material on Katorz and Infini if Piggy was still around? They maybe would have written something new and different, no one really knows.

...how strong it is, just because he wanted to give the fans a last present before he fades away. The problem is, that most people like you compare every new album with the classics, but Voivod never ever intented to replicate an album, they never intended to make another DH or NF. The last three are great in their own way, more stripped down, punkish and more rock'n'roll. It's ok if you don't like them, that's your thing, but don't say bullshit like "they went downhill". They never did, because they prevented themselves from it by always changing, that way they couldn't stagnate and go "down hill".

That's absolute bullshit. Phobos is a masterpiece and one of their absolute best, on the same level as Nothingface or Dimension Hatröss. And just because the last 3 are more straight and less progressive doesn't mean they're bad. Voivod has always changed and evolved, it wouldn't be Voivod if they just kept putting out Nothingface over and over. There are even people who only like their first three just because they are closeminded and can't accept change. There went nothing downhill, they just changed their style again and you don't like this change. And also, you can't really rate the last two as regular Voivod records, because they couldn't change or re-arrange the material or write something new when it was maybe not strong enough, because Piggy is not around anymore to do that. You have to remember that it was a request of Piggy to release this material, so it would be a disgrace to not release it. Piggy probably just played and wrote every riff down he came up with, no matter...

This band went downhill after Negatron. No one rly wants to say Infini is bad because its like kicking Piggy while he's down, its not fair. Unfortunately its painful to listen to. albums like Nothingface, Dimension Hatross (being the best) and Killing Technology are masterpieces though. Give each one a listen, its rewarding.

Yes, it is coincidence, because the idea with the gasmask is very old for Voivod, look on the cover of their first album "War and Pain", there is such a gasmask. It's a part of the story/concept of the Voivod (post nuclear world etc.), it also appears in their lyrics sometimes like in "Gasmask Revival" from 2003.

Is it a coincidence that their final album's artwork is so similar to Nasum's retrospective 'Grind Finale' 's artwork, or are they both based on an iconic piece of art I'm not aware of? http://fici.bira.gen.tr/grindfinale_large.jpg http://trickledown.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/voivod-infini.jpg
